We loved Buenos Aires! We were staying in a hostel in San Telmo which is a bohemian district filled with interesting old cafes & bars like El Doringo & El Federal, antique shops and on Sunday all the streets are blocked for a big market with such interesting clothes, handmade jewellry, mate gourds ( we were wishing it was our last stop not our first as there was such cool stuff there but we didn´t have room for anything!!) and so much live music including an 8 peice band complete with an ancient piano they had carried out, accrodians, violins and cellos it was fantastic! we saw lots of tango dancing in the streets for the tourists as BA is the home of tango! such a dramatic and sensual dance.. Kate tried to convince Peter to come to a Tango class with her but to no avail..
We explored the markets tourist strip of La Bocca a very poor area with its famously bright painted tin homes ( which must get so hot in summer as they are jam packed with people) and visted the La Bocca stadium and museum ( and shrine to Maradonna!) and saw thr stadium with its bombombira ( chocolate blocks levels of standing zones which must go mental with passionate crowds at the games as we saw on some of the video footage in the museum. Unfortunately we had just missed the league so we didn´t get to a live game but it was great for Peter to see it.
We got the mad no. 29 bus through the whole or BA from La bocca to Palermo the trendy part of town with lots of boutique shops & upmarket bars & cafes to visit the Evita Peron memorial/Museum which was so well put together of different aspects of her life & views of her impact on argentina.
We also saw the place du Mayo ( where so many demonstrations and significant political and social demonstrations have taken place and the Ave 9th Julio.
Our best find was a local Parilla ( grilled meat shop which are so big in Argentina) with choripan ( sausage sandwiches) for $1!! thanks wattsy for the hot tip!!
We had out 1st mate tea ritual with Sander a lovely Argentian/Serbian girl who worked at the hostel (its such a nice tradition of sharing and kate is in love with the mate tea!!) and had a huge night with Sander & Peri a columbian girl ( man those argentians like to stay out late!! They eat dinner as a family at around 10pm and everything kicks off in the cafes at about 1am until very late and were very hungover the next day trying to sort out replacing our argentian travel guide we accidently packed home to Oz and other organisation in the heat!
We have been impressed from our very first meal with the BEST STEAKS IN THE WORLD!! seriously!! the organic pampas grass they feed on is meant to be so nutricious and the meat is so amazingly tender you can eat it with a butter knife! wash that down with some mendoaz malbec and were were in food heaven!
