Gutentag!!! Hello from Germany! On our way to the capital Berlin, we stopped in Dresden, a town that got thousands of bombs dropped on it during World War Two. The town was completely destroyed and so it was interesting to see that they've rebuilt it to almost what it was before. They've even used some of the old charred bricks and so some of the building look like they've been burnt which is kind of a cool look. We then continued on our way to Berlin. It's a place mostly known for it's situation after world war two, in particular the Berlin Wall and the division between East and West. After Germany was defeated in World War Two, it was decided that not only Germany as a whole, but also Berlin should be split up between the Allied forces. The US, French, UK and The Soviets all got a part but The Soviets decided to make their part communism. A lot of people didn't like this and so moved into the western side which wasn't. Well the Soviets weren't happy that they were losing a lot of people which meant their labor force was decreasing, therefore overnight in 1961 a wall was put up blockading people from entering the west. This wall remained in place for 28 years separating the people, until in 1989 it was finally pulled down and Berlin was whole again. Parts of the wall are still up and on the driving tour we went on, you can definitely tell the difference between the east and west with the east side being a little bit run down compared to the west.
The next day we went on a Third Reich walking tour where the ruling of Nazis, Communism and everyday life for Germans of the time was explained in greater detail. It was very interesting and surprising that it was a German girl who took the tour as to this day a lot of Germans don't like to talk of what happened during the Nazi ruling.
Like I said Germany is a very interesting place filled with lots of history. It's not the prettiest place we've been to simply because a lot of Germany's money has gone to paying war reparations from World War One which they only finished paying last year and now they have to start on World War Two funds. But still it was a great city which would've been good to have more time in.
