Today was quite chilly! We walked across the street and grabbed a quick breakfast and a little Cuban shack across the street. The Seaplane Tour called to say thay they might have a spot for us on the 10AM flight. The weather was not looking good, so we didn't have our hopes up. Unfortunately, the trip was cancelled. Too bad!
We decided to get another one of those delicious beignets at the bakery. This time, I had Key Lime, and Justin had Nutella. YUM. I am going to be missing these for a long time. We decided to head to the Hemingway House and took the guided tour. It was a neat house and the tour was really interesting. We even got to see the studio where he wrote many of his most famous works. It was a great way to spend a few hours!
Justin had mentioned a bait shop/bar that he wanted to check out, so we went on a walk by the marina to see if we could find it. Luckily, we happened to stumble upon it, and sat at the 4 barstool bar and had a nice chat with the bartender/bait shop cashier. Off to lunch at the Half Shell Raw Bar. We ate the following:
Conche Ceviche: Conch is too chewy, but it had a nice spicy kick and tasted fresh.
Onion Rings: These were actually more like crispy onion straws and came piled high in a basket.
1/2 pound of Peel and Eat Shrimp: These were really delicious. I preferred these to the seasoned ones.
Justin got 1/2 dozen oysters which he said we some of the best oysters he's had.
It was a great lunch!
We got back and dropped the bikes off. We took the back streets back to the hotel and looked at all the beautiful Key West homes.
Even though it was like 60 degrees out, we decided to go swimming. Since the pool is heated, the water was pretty comfortable once you got used to it.
We decided to try a local Cuban restaurant, El Siboney. It was tucked away just a few blocks from our hotel. It was quite hopping when we arrived, and had to wait maybe 15 minutes. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, which was good, but didn't contain any chopped fruit (my fav). Our meal started with cuban bread, which was a crusty white bread with melted butter. I ordered a roasted pork, tamale, and casava dinner. They were very generous with portions for a reasonable price. The casava was interesting and not something I'd had before. Sort of like a white, flavorless mashed root. Justin got the roasted pork that came with yellow rice and beans. We got the rest of our sangria to go and were thankful for a short walk home.
We headed back to the room to pack and talked about how nice it was just to get away. Even though our activities got cancelled, we still had plenty to do and did it at a nice comfortable pace.
Wasn't looking forward to heading back to the cold tomorrow!
