Another one of those early morning starts for something a little different this time - a 2 day Wilderness Adventure in Doubtful Sound...Kayaking ! A nice small group only 8 plus the guide. We drove to Pearl Harbour (no not in Hawaii) and caught a little "tinny" over to the other side of Lake Manapouri to then travel by mini bus up over the Wilmots Pass to Deep Cove. This is where we packed our kayaks with pretty much everything including the tents. I had control of steering and after 30mins i managed to get the hang of it. We paddled for about 5 hours which was really relaxing and the water was like a mill pond in places creating amazing reflections of the mountains and waterfalls. Apart from a couple of boats we saw no-one all day. The weather was a little overcast but the rain stayed away until we set up camp in the rainforest that night. Cooked up good old soup and pasta for dinner in a tiny shettler then settled down for the night in our new funky sleeping bags at about 9:30pm. Up early for breakfast, crumpets and honey. Our guide seemed a little worried as it was still raining and a big front was due in but hay full steam ahead and we paddled harder and faster. At some points you couldnt see in front of you it rained that hard you just had to keep your head down and go for it without stopping. Only once i shouted at Tom to say i couldnt do it anymore but didnt really have much choice in the matter so got on with it. Back on land just before lunch and set up a shelter using the minibus and a tarp and attempted to get changed into semi dry clothes. Again back over Wilmots pass and on a very bumby boat ride back to base in Te Anau. All in, it was a really good trip and i'm glad i experienced the bad weather !
