ah mykonos...how i love thee...
well the ferry trip was a dream! i dont like boats as it happens...turns out i dont like small boats on choppy oceans...HUGE ferry although i think the one between the new zealand islands is bigger...we hired dvd players and dvds, ate and the time passed really quickly...think it would have been in the vicinity of 4-5 hours? i do note that people smoke inside on ferries but not too much of a problem on this one as we could escape outside if so desired...very roomy...unfortunately the supplied main tv was again in greek! fancy that...
got to mykonos and very pretty...has lots of those whitewashed buildings and blue roofed churches going on...had an initial run in with the ferry company who wouldnt change our tickets for our return to a high speed ferry option (santorini is quite a way from athens) but my mate sorted it out...goes to show a bit of charm with the young lads can go a long way (i got the old codger)...so we were sorted!!!!!
got a taxi to our hotel and what a dream! i should mention this was a package deal we had got through flight centre so werent sure what to expect...the deal included all our ferry tickets, accommodation with breakfast (2 nights athens, 8 nights islands) and one private transfer to piraeus (yeah one...how the hell are you supposed to get home? we took the metro of course) excellent value all round but i digress...
so ive forgotten the hotels name damn it...but it was AWESOME! it was a fabulous start to our island holiday...after our grumpy, hot introduction to mykonos (in terms of the silly ferry company) this place was heaven...cool, beautiful pool and bar open all hours...so we unpacked and headed straight to the pool for tanning and pina coladas...lovin it...although i must admit im a little less into tanning than i used to be back in the day...been burnt too many times before i think ;p
well we were there for the rest of the night! lured into our beds at some wee hour after a fatal long island iced tea (after far too many coladas i must say)...i blame it on the 24 hour bar and the drunk persons food they served...we didnt have too move at all :)
next morning dragged ourselves up for a look around town...egads it was hard work, specially as we were a little outside of town and it involved a walk down and up a hill in the blistering sun with little shade...but gorgeous township - by far my favourite on the islands we saw...lots of quirky arty stores mixed with designer fashion and trinkety stuff...had a chat to an artist bloke whod moved there from england...what a life...
the township was nearly all white with lots of different coloured doors and rooves (roofs?) ;p the pavement was like big flagstones which were bordered with white paint...we saw someone re-painting around the stones when we were there...that must be a job that is never finished...get to the end and you have to start again...just gorgeous...had dinner one night by the waterfront...more greek salad and amazing calamari...the food was seriously a highlight of this trip...specially after english food for the previous three months or so...
the third day my friend and i hired a quadbike and went zooming round the island...was nice doing it together although it struggled up the hills in particular and i had to get off on a really steep one...lots of backfiring or the petrol not getting through i think...saw paradise beach and super paradise beach....paradise is where the action happens as the sun goes down but we didnt hang around for that as we had to get the bike back for 8 pm...super paradise was just gorgeous...all these places had sun beds with umbrellas you could hire, cocktail bars, beautiful small sandy beaches and thumping party music (ministry of sound type)
then we were off...got a taxi back to the port and headed on a catamaran to paros (part of the deal - we didnt choose it!)
