my impressions of athens...
well to start with the hotel was not too crash hot - call that three stars???!!! as my dear friend and companion said as we opened the door: "it smells like farts"...however we got a better room on the second time we stayed there so must be the luck of the draw...
LOVED the food...love the plaka district...and all those little stalls on the streets with everything you might want like mini oreos at 11pm...and the water is so much cheaper than ireland!
stray dogs everywhere - looked mostly friendly...apparently collars were put on them during the olympics so they looked like they belonged to someone...cops smoking AND directing traffic through functional traffic lights (why, one might ask?)
what is it with greece and refurbishing their monuments? shouldnt they decay with time - isnt that part of their charm? and never mind the fact that your special pictures dont look that special with scaffolding over everything...
motorbikes everywhere - watch out! and 50% of peeps riding without helmets...in fact - australia, you are looking pretty strict right about now in a really good way - when it comes to smoking and traffic safety...
lots of RUDE people - may help to speak greek and be super pushy, assertive, you name it...politeness did not appear to be worshipped...
right...where was i...well what did i see? in terms of sights...well one day felt like enough really to cover the MAJOR things...so there was the parthenon on the acropolis...and several other ruins scattered around the city (hadrians arch?, temple of zeus/apollo?)...the archaeological museum was FANTASTIC! the funny dudes (their attire was different ;p ) guarding parliament house...greek dancing in the plaka...very touristy - they looked a little bored...the tourist bus - take it or leave it...its run by the government so is literally a bus to get you from A to B...
bloody hot in june...think theres air con on the metro and it was on when we returned from the greek isles but not when we left...oh and no waiting on the metro like one does in london...oh no - push your way in there...but really easy to get around...would be even easier if you could read greek...
the television was all in greek too except for english movies after 9 on star tv...i need to learn some more languages...cos tv is so important while one is on holiday ;p
from here we caught a ferry at port piraeus to mykonos - yay! easy to get the metro to the port too...and easy to get a bus to the airport...
