so then it was off to germany...
first an unscheduled stop at cologne or koln...there i saw the koln cathedral, the first german buildings of multi-coloured shades...what a cute place...and finally somewhere i hadnt been!
the cologne cathedral was nice but no more exciting i thought then others i had seen in the uk...felt a little gothic in nature although i am not an architectural purist and dont know my eras...of course it was snowing AGAIN! so being out in cologne was miserable in my opinion...and couldnt get a hot chocolate either :( after the cathedral though, i trotted along to the first christmas markets id seen of the european flavour...these were wonderful...i had a glass of gluhwein...which was so much nicer than the mulled wine id had at the london bonfire...just stood up and took it at the little market stall...
also had some kind of sausage (wurst something) with mustard in a tiny bun...this was yummy...lots of foodie treats and glassware and little ornaments...a lot made of wood which i wasnt sure i could bring back...certainly the europeans know how to do christmas! i think we miss out here although i wont trade our weather for theirs...
after that, headed for st goar along the rhine valley...so dark in europe so early in winter which makes seeing things difficult...anyway we hit a beer stein making place and i bought one of those (there were some with bits of the berlin wall on them which were apparently super valauble...hmmm) and also saw some cuckoo clocks (the biggest one in the world too) and birkenstocks...cruddy hotel here...but the rhine valley as we were driving out the next day was gorgeous...little multi-coloured houses along a wide river with mountains ringing it...and barges to transport goods along with their own mounted cars...fabulous...also saw the lorelai siren who bewitched the hearts of sailors to their death (or a statue of her rather)
pretty, pretty, pretty...but better in summer perhaps...or at least spring...my german wasnt too great either...could manage the odd guten tag...certainly noticed a difference from amsterdam, namely in the tv...in the nederlands i think EVERYONE speaks english and they cater to us with their television subtitled in dutch...hey - i like my tv - this is an important factor in travelling ;p
