Today will be my last entry for Peru! :(
We woke at 6.30 and enjoyed some lovely pancakes and strawberry jam for breakfast with our family. We said out thank yous and goodbyes and took a photograph to remember them by.
Fransica then walked up down to the dock which was a great deal easier without the fruit (and it was downhill). The rain in the night had caused some mini land slides so the part had part galled into the stream.
After saying goodbye in Quechua we got our boat for 1 hour to: Solo Island where we walked 2km uphill to get to a town that looked like a ghost town. We then took a 15 min walk uphill again to a restaurant where we had a great view of Lake Titicaca and we enjoyed our first meat (fish) for 48 hours!
A 10 min down hill walk brought us back to the boat where the boys jumped into the rather cold lake for a quick swim!
We began our 3 hour boat journey back to Puno which was really sunny!! When we got back the festival was in full swing and we had to walk the last two blocks to our hotel as there were dancers in huge costumes everywhere!
We showered and went out to see the festival and buy some food for our journey tomorrow. The carnival was crazy. There were a hundred times more food/drink sellers on the streets. Lots of drunk people. Everyone was happy and waving. The processions going down the streets had dancers followed by a band - either brass band and drums or wind pipes and drums. They all seemed to play the same song! Some costumes were really interesting and big, but after seeing a few groups go past the costumes got a bit repetitive. It was hard work trying to walk through the streets as there were so many people but we got some really cheap food because of the carnival!
We ate pizza in the window of a restaurant on the main high street so we could still see the procession go past. It started to rain heavily and everyone put see through ponchos on over their costumes and carried on!
We rested for 1 hour at the hotel before joining the group (minus brain as he was unwell and Paul and Alison) for a drink at a reggae rock bar! The atmosphere had stepped up a level as it had got dark and the families with children had gone home.
We enjoyed beers whilst playing jenga. Grant and I danced with some locals for the last half an hour which was actually really hard work because of the altitude!
When we left the bar at midnight there were less groups on parade and an awful lot of drunk people. We joined in dancing with one group on the way back to our hotel which was fun. One local even came up and haver a drink!
