Welcome back Friends and Lovers for another instalment of Jimmy World!
I'm now sitting pretty in the wonderous oasis that is Western Australia, or perhaps more precisely shivering away like a madman! On arriving in Perth, I was relieved to be wearing trousers, and to have two jackets to hand, as in comparison to Singapore, Perth is reminiscent of the South Pole! At the airport I met Kimmy, Daddy's ex wife, so ex (evil) step mummy, if that role exists. Oops, how could I forget, I ate plane food, now before you all go in to shock, it was pretty much out of pure desperation, from lack of food, as well as to soak up the abundant supply of Heineken that Qantas have to offer. Anyway the relevance to the rest of the story, is that by now I was starving and in some serious need of tasting real food again! So we headed straight to the local, for steak and red wine, very tasty, and provided me with the energy for a game of pool. From this day on, myself and Kimmy chose to play pool every day, but I think this first game remains the most memorable. First I should point out that neither of us have any pool skills to speak of as such, but this night I thought I was doing fairly well as I ran away with the lead, potting my final red, before looking to the table to notice a distinct lack of a black pool ball. Somewhat baffled I looked to Kimmy, who had also failed to spot this ever so slight problem previously, sadly on checking the rack we realised that the second ball to hit the deck was indeed our black omen. With slight embarrassment, and an array of giggling we coyly snuck away to the (empty) dance floor for a boogie. My final point from this night, is to offer a warning to all male friends, to never use a story about lady boys and breast milk to impress the barmaid, as the terrified look of both shock and horror that the story will be greeted with, sends chills to your core!
The next day we headed down to Leederville, a stylish, fashionable little spot in Perth, which is home to a very funky, if slightly expensive, clothes store. We then headed to the bottle shop, where I faced the difficult decision of choosing what Australian beer I actually considered to be drinkable, sadly sampling was out of the question, so I went for Ted's! Even the European beers, are brewed here rather than imported, so to my surprise the aussies cant even brew a foreign beer properly, especially painful when you are paying $8.50 upwards for a Pint, although that is a wee bit cheaper than Singapore! That night we sampled some of the nightlife that North Bridge has to offer, pretty much the main place to go out and about in Perth by night. Ooh, finally had a pizza too, which was greatly needed as had started to suffer from dairy withdrawls! Pretty tasty little bite too, even if I could barely stand after, and the walking did prove to be quite an effort with the extra 5 kg of weight I felt had just been consumed. This was my first of many nights, that we hit the Elephant and Wheelbarrow for some live band action, why is there not more of this back home!
The next day we went to the city centre, I had to call Nationwide, after the possessed cash machine in Singapore ate my card out of pure spite! Plus Kimmy bought me a lovely shirt for my Birthday, which now means I have three shirts for my travels, making me very much the uber flashpacker! Later Kimmy took me to her work, at the Sunday Times, to meet her colleagues before the work do that night. Free drink, just a little bit of food, and a dash of dancing, we moved onto North Bridge, to see another live act, meet a Vampire (Kimmy's best buddy), and then sample the shooters with Ed in the Elephant! Apparently myself and Ed were doing rather well with the ladies that night, although neither of us actually remember much of this and I sadly forgot to take any pikkies. A consistent issue with Perth in general actually, where my camera barely saw the light of day, perhaps taking 900 in Singapore had led me to pikkie burn out!
The Saturday was nice and sunny, so I even got the shorts out, even if I needed my hoody still, and on Monique's recommendation and to Kimmy's absolute disgust we got the train down to Freo (Freemantle), to visit Little Creatures. a quaint little brewery on the waterfront, however I did realise when we arrived that I had actually visited with Daddy before, but still we stayed for a drink by the sea. That night we went to Queens, for a bite to eat, one of my favourite bars, as it just feels cool and always has atmosphere, plus good food! We met Ed at the Elephant again, but i also got rejected from another bar, as despite my best attempts the bouncer would accept that my driving license was classed as internationally accepted id.
On Sunday we headed down to the Red Bull Air Races, which we watched from the vantage point of the Lucky Shag, it seems that Australians like events that give them an excuse for a drink, but then seem to forget about the event, as basically only me and Kimmy were even watching the races, until the fighter jet appeared at least. I am happy to report, that as confirmation that British pilots are the best, we took 3rd, 2nd and 1st place! The day continued at quite a pace, and involved various drinking establishments, before heading home for a nice long chinwag with Kimmy, before hitting the sack in the early hours of the morning.
That ends my blog about Perth, except for the football scores update that is, the English were lagging throughout the match, and unable to match the aussies, who maintained their slender single goal lead right to the end, leaving the final score as Australia 1 England 0. The team have now moved down to Margaret River for 9 weeks of intensive training, in preperation for their upcoming tour of South East Asia.
