My luck with weather has finally turned around. It is wonderfully warm and sunny here in Florence! I really love this city, it is so beautiful. I'm on my last night here now and have had such a wonderful time!
On day one we got in really early from our night train so we were pretty tired most of the day. We walked around and checked out the street market that is really near our hostel. An awesome street market that close to where I am staying is not good for my limited budget and space issues- but I managed to restrain myself for the most part. We also took a free walking tour offered by our hostel, frankly we got what we paid for. I didn't understand the guide well and we only saw like 4 things but it did get us acquanted with the lovely and easy to navigate streets of Florence- plus it was free!
On day two we headed towards the Uffizi where we had reservations but on the way ran into the Duomo. It is a little embarising to admit but Dana and I didn't know what it was at first, we just saw this beautiful building and wanted to check it out. I finally found out what is was by reading the back of a post card being sold there. Luckily we were ther early and we didn't have to wait in line very long to get in, it was breath-taking! Wonderful works of art and architecture built in the 1400s, it was amazing.
From there we headed to the Uffizi, honestly I was a little underwhelmed by this famous museum. It was pretty cool, I got to see the Birth of Venus which it is really famous for but I guess I was expecting more. Quite a bit of the museum was underconstrution so mayb that's why. After the Uffizi we checked out the Bargello museum which I thought was much more impressive, there were lots of really neat sculptures including Donetel's David.
After all of the wandering about it was time to take a siesta to get away from the heat of the day and then a nice supper out at one of the restaurants near our hostel.
Today was even more full. We started out going to the Academia to see Michalangelo's David. Once again I found the famous museum to be a little less than I expected. The David was incredible and so was the hallway it was displayed it. The hallway is lined with other unfinished sculptures mostly by Michalangelo, that part was really neat. There wasn't much more to the museum though. After the Acedemia we headed to the National Archeological museum which had some really neat artifacts, my favorite were some Eritrian vases shaped like funny little men. The museum was, however, unbearable hot. That combined with the rising heat of the coming afternoon inspired us to take another siesta and sleep through the hottest point of the day.
After the siesta we headed out to find a Gellato shop Blaine suggested for me and on the way we ran into a funny little parade thing. There was a large group of people dressed in mid-evel period dress marching down the street to the beating of drums and trumphets, some were carrying Florence's flage. It was funny and very intersting, I have no idea what it was for.
We found the Gelato and it was amazing. Ice cream has been a theme of our trip, we get it pretty much every day, I think we deserve it with the amount of walking we do!
While enjoying our gelato we walked to the Piazzo Michalangelo which had the most beautiful view of the city. It was a very strenous uphill trek but the gorgeous view was definetly worth it!
Tomorrow afternoon we are headed to Rome for a 4 days, I'm sad to leave Florece but excited to continue on my travels! Unfortunetly this blog doesn't have a picture of Florence so I had to put up one of Rome!
