Hello from beautiful Sorrento!
I'm really loving Italy, the weather has been gorgeous and I'm seeing and experiencing so many wonderful things. Since my last update I've been to Rome and moved on to Sorrento.
I liked Rome, not as much as Florence but it was still really nice. It was much busier and fast-paced but there were sooo many great historical things to see. My first day there was very busy. I went to the colloseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine hill which were all amazing. By that time we were prettly sweaty and dirty so we went back to the hostel for a shower break and then checked out the Spanish steps and the Trevi fountain. I made sure to throw a coin in the Trevi fountain so I'll come back to Rome someday (that's what the tradition is). After Trevi we went to a much smaller fountain called the Triton fountain which was nice, we enjoyed a glass of wine in a little restaurant around the square and ended up chatting with some very nice people originally from the US and London and they bought our drinks for us! So all in all it was a great day with a really nice end.
Day two we headed to the vatican museums. There is sooo much to see there. My favorite was the map room, it has maps frescoed on the wall from differnt dates of what they thought Italy looked like and has a magnificently decoreated ceiling as well. The Sistine chapel was also amazing but there were tons of people in there all not listening to announcements and being loud and taking pictures so that kind of took away from the experience of that room for me. That evening we did a bit of evening wandering and checked out some more fountains.
Day three was St. Peter's basilica. We went really early so ther wasn't even a crowd. It was absoulutely beautiful. It was also kind of funny because we were there so early that the cleanin people were still there dusting and filly up the holy water containers and what not. They were just ordinary Italians and I found the contrast between the other worldliness of St Peter's and the very down to earth maintainance crew quite funny.
Then we headed to Sorrento, the air condidtioner on the train we took didn't work so it was a toasty ride! Our hostel here is super nice, with a beautiful rooftop terrace where we met some really nice people.
yesterday was our first full day here and we headed to Pompeii, it was really interesting to see. I've watched so many TV specials on it that it was super cool to see with my own eyes. After about 4 hours I came back to Sorrento and went to the beach. It wasn't so much of a beach as a ocean access point. Here the ocean comes right up to the base of the mountains so for the public beach they just made a cement slap with stair going into the water. It was still nice to sit in the sun and take a dip in the ocean though! That night the hostel had live music and I really enjoyed sitting in the porch area listening to it. It was Italian regae, vey interesting but great music.
Today I'm going to check out Herculaneum and then we're going by trian to Bari where we will catch a ferry to Greece tomorrow. That's all for now, gotta go pack!
