Suzannah's Kenyan Expedition!
Well end of week four, officially the half way line in the project! Only four more teaching weeks left... cant beilve how fast its gone, but at the same time i feel like ive been here forever!
This week has been really good and both my Julie (my partner) and i feel we have have really got into it now at both of the placements. On monday and tues we had a nie group of children at Noble homes and we started on our weekly theme of 'Your loal area and family'! We went through basic phrases and vocab and mixed in games and songs whihc they all really enjoyed! Its so frustrating when we cant speak thier mother tongue but we are doing ok, thankfully Evans is normally around to translate if we get stuck!
At the primary school it is now the holidays but standard 6.7 and 8 have to come in for extra tuition for their exms...whcih they have to pay for. We ended up teaching a few lessons single handedly both days because the teacher did not turn up (and by the sounds of it, knew she would be able to rely on our good nature to cover for her). But we are going to have a word with the headmaster on weds because we are not meant to be teaching on our own, especialy when they are menat to be preparign for exams. Some of the teaching dont seam to relasie we are there for extra support and extra cirricualr activites etc. However we had a realyl good session with the standard 8s about cross cultural diferneces on wednesday which turned into a student led debate about Polygammy! We were really pleased and so asked if we could start a debating club for the them. We have elected a chair person and had the first proper date on thursday afternoon, of whihc they chose the motion ' are teachers better than farmers!' It was a bit wierd but they caem up with some really good ideas and it relay is good for their confience and english! Hopefully it will eb able to carry on when we have left.
Yesterday we went to the Museum and four girls from year 6, whonhave become our little friends wanted to coem so met us there...it was so sweet they came wearing their unform! awww! They were really sweet and well behaved... we saw the room with all the traditional Luo artifacts in and stuffed game animals, then we saw the aquarium and the crocpdiles and snakes! teher was also a model construction of a Luo tribal homestead...was really interesting! We got them sodas and then walked them back to the bus park, they were so chuffed - with something so small!
This morning we went to Selina's church (the woman who runs Noble) which was certainly an experience! Was very different to the church of england anyway! The singing was fabulous!
We are going to the massia mara next weekend... so will have alot more to way then! Hope you are all well, x x
