Suzannah's Kenyan Expedition!
Ok, well firstly a big sorry thhat i havent filled it in for the past couple of weeks, the internet hahs been down in Kisumu and ive also been soooo busy! the last weeks at the school and Noble Homes have been the best and the most tiring at the same time! all the things that we were working on came together and we both felt we had just got through to the children and staff. on the 1st september we organised a 'tenteleni extravaganza' - this was a day where all the children from all the placements could take part in a sports day and football tournament and then a vairety show in the afternoon where they could sing and dance etc They all loved it! They are soooo good and singing an dancing and we spent so long helping them practice thier routines! It paid off becuase a journalist form the Kenya times came and we appeared in the newspaper! Sadly, they thought that a picture of the wazungu volunteers singing the finale was a better picture...!
At our school we contined with the debating group we set up and they were really getting into it! Hopefully it will continue when we are gone...the head teacher was eager for it to continue anyway. We also did lots of HIV/Aids sessions in the last bweek with some local youth groups whihc were well recieved. They were relaly open with us and we got into some really interesting debates about how the local luo traditions have somewhat increased the spread of the virus...it was encouraging that the young people are starting to question their traditions and make them safer rather than just accepting the norm.
So after 8 weeks although we were all really sad to leave everyone, i was deffinately ready! Living in a cramped flat with no running water and electricy with bad food had just started to get to me! I am really glad i have a few days at the coast to relax before i have to jump back into city life at uni! Tomorrow we are heading up to Lamu, which is small island just off the north coast of Kenya in the indian ocean... its a really of Swahilli town with no cars and is really laid back...! Cant wait! Hope to see you all when i get back to England.
