We've had such a good last week. The last time I wrote I think was in Brisbane. Since then we've been to Fraser Island, stayed a night on a Cattle Farm in the middle of the Bush, and arrived here in Airlie Beach.
From Brisbane we bypassed Noosa and arrived in Hervey Bay, it was a long drive - 10hours or so. But we stopped on Rainbow beach and our driver taught us how to play the digeridoo and throw a boomerang so it returns, both are harder than they look, but it was too windy to get the boomerang to come back.
Then we arrived in Hervey Bay early evening. It's got 60,000 residents but it's so spread out that there isn't really much to do unless you have a car, which we didn't. It's just basically the gateway to Fraser Island. It is where Elle MacPhearson grew up though. We were only there for one night, then we got the ferry to Fraser Island the next morning.
In the end we upgraded our tour from self drive to guided, so we didn't have to camp outside with all the snakes and got lush food! Our driver was Chris, he was really nice but had been doing his job for 3years - too long. The coach was a massive beast of a coach, with huge wheels and sat up to 40people, except there was only 20 of us so it was very very bumpy because there was only half the weight. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, it's about 15km wide and 122km long, all made of sand. It also has some of the most deadly species of snakes and spiders, and sharks - so swimming in the sea was not an option, although some did. There's no proper roads, just bumpy tracks in the sand - single track, so I felt sorry for any group that came round a corner to find our massive truck coming towards them.
The food was amazing. We had a nice buffet breakfast, then a packed lunch thing out of the resort - on the beach or in the forest, then for afternoon tea there were hot drinks and muffins and cookies. Then we arrived back for tea at 6.30pm.
Parts of Fraser Island are so remote. Apparently a group just like ours went out 3years ago, and one man in his mid-fifties went wandering off for a walk, when it was time to get back on the coach his group couldn't find him, so they went off to look. After a few hours the police were called and search parties were launched, then the media got hold of it and he wasn't found until last year - 2 years later, a girl went to the toilet behind a tree and tripped over his skeleton. They don't know how he died, whether it was a spider bite or heart attack or something, but it's not very nice, so if we went wandering off then we had to tell someone. Appart from that it's such a beautiful island. There is enough fresh water to supply the whole of Australia, and that's saying something because Australia is suffering one of it's worst droughts right now, they have signs everywhere saying we can't take a shower that's longer than 4 minutes.
Our rooms in Fraser were actually quite nice. We had these cabin things, which were very noisy when it rained but better than camping on the beach. The resort we stayed on had a really nice hotel for all the rich families at the bottom of Heart Attack Hill (which was probably intentional because they knew no backpacker would try to climb up that hill). There was a beauty spa where I got a massage on easter day - it felt so good after carrying my bag for months. There was also a nice pool, which we planned to use on our extra day that we added on, but it rained most of the time sadly.
Our group was really nice, we were very lucky with that, met some nice people that we're going to stay in contact with.
We were on bed inspection every night for spiders, and on the last night Becky found a million ants in hers, which was gross. Also, on the last night, luckily it was only us 2 in the room, but I woke at 1.30am to go to the toilet and saw Becky sit bolt upright in her bed looking panicked. So I asked her what was wrong, and she said she couldn't find her sun glasses. So I asked her why she needed them and she just kept saying she'd lost them and couldn't find them. I thought she's just being stupid in her sleep so she'll forget about it in a few seconds. When I got back from the toilet I saw she'd turned all the lights on, got down from her bunk and was searching below the bed. It was so funny and cracked me up all night! I'm still laughing now!
On one of the days on Fraser I spontaneously decided to go up in a plane. Literally the pilot got on our bus when we were on the beach and asked if anyone wanted to go, so I got up that second and got on board. It was only a 7 seater - so really small. It was $70 for 15mins but how many times can you say you took off and landed on the beach?! We flew above the sea, it was so clear you could see everything in it, sadly we saw no sharks or dolphins, although they are quite common. I did see a mantaray though. And earlier on we saw 3 sharks from Indian Head. The pilot started doing these air acrobatics, like turning on our side and dropping quickly. The girl in front of me was clinging onto her seat very tightly!
We didn't see any poisonous spiders, well, not too deadly ones. There were some 4inch ones in the toilet and by the river, and we only saw one snake, which was half way down heartattack hill, luckily we got the shuttle bus and didn't walk!
After Fraser Island we returned to hervey Bay. Becky stayed at the hostel all the next day by the pool, but I decided to spend the day at the beach. It was really nice, all 15km of white sand and calm warm ocean. I probably had about 2km of beach all to myself.
Last night we spend on a cattle station, which was miles from civilisation. It's crazy how remote things can be. Me and Becky decided to practice our shot gun shooting. So we did the clay pigeon shooting. Very fun! We both got 2 out of 5 which is good considering it's our first time and the target is moving! The guns were massive and when you fired it it pushed you backwards slightly, and we had to wear ear muffs. Then we watched some people catch and fake brand a goat, then had a roast dinner. Then one man taught us how to break the sound barrier (660mph) and crack a whip.Becky tried it once and failed so she gave up. I think mine was broken cos I couldn't make it work. Then after that some people rode the mechanical bull, we didn't give it a go though because everyone was sat around watching, and I would've embarrased myself greatly. Last night, in our room the fire alarm went off for some reason. Strangly enough 1 girl slept through it (and this was LOUD), and the rest of us didn't bother getting up, I didn't even register it was a firm alarm. But the farm lady had to come in with her dog at 2 am and rip the alarm out. We had to be up at 5.50am this morning. We had 11hours of driving! Watched Crackerjack (about Bowls) and Cold Mountain. Airlie Beach is nice, apparently Donald Trump's wife, Ivana, owns a hotel over looking the whitsunday islands, which we are going sailing on on saturday.
