I, we, have seen whales! And we were just walking along the edge of the harbour...
Hermanus is THE place for whale-watching, which is why we are here indeed, tomorrow we are going on a (v exp) trip to look for them. We left Barrydale in cool, wet weather this morning, and drove through old Afrikaans settlements, and rich farming country strongly reminiscent of the Scottish Borders or the Yorkshire Wolds - until you notice a flock of cranes or a large opuntia cactus in flower. Pic shows the little son of the Anglican vicar of Hermanus' St Peter's; I had wandered into the church grounds to photograph the very English-looking flower borders. The gardener brought over the little boy, who wanted to be in a picture. We met his African mother, and his father from Chelmsford - who has a degree in ceramics from Stoke-on-Trent.
