Some of the most memorable assemblies I remember from Yarm are those in which Leslie Fox told the stories of the British defeat at Isandlwana, and their heroic defence of Rorke's Drift (essentially the story of the film 'Zulu'). I told Peter I'd like to go there; he hired an extraordinarily knowledgeable guide for a day, and we had a wonderful time being driven to sites, having the history retold, and finding out a lot about things as they are now. The sun shone, but there was a bit of breeze. Nothing bit me. This pic shows us in the circle, now marked by stones, where the defenders of the Rorke's Drift mission built their final redoubt from biscuit barrels and meal sacks. The church behind is where the stores were kept; the building at the far left is on the exact site of the mission 'hospital' that caught fire. (I am writing this days after the event, and have just been trounced at Scrabble.)
