Hello there!
Today was my first full day in London after flying in last night. I have to say, the flight wsn't that bad. Lining up at the gate in Sydney I was beginning to get really excited and then when my boarding pass was scanned a 'bad sound' came out of the computer. I thought 'Oh god, they're going to kick me off the flight!' But no dear reader. It turns out that I had managed to snag a free upgrade to Business Class. The height of luxury to a backapcker who is used to 20 person dorms and living on 2 meals a day to save money to go out at night. No such luck for the second flight of the day but you can't have anything in life can you?
Arriving safe and sound in Heathrow I met up with Mich (my travel bud) and we headed off to the hostel on the London Undergound. Very exciting. :) Then it was a shower and bed.
The next morning (still obviously on Sydney time) Mich and I were up bu 6:15am so we decided to get a jump start on the planning for our week in London. Many post-it notes and 2 pieces of toast later we were on our way Madame Tussauds.
I have to say that it wasn't as cool as I was expecting it to be and the line that we found ourself in didn't add to the glamour that they were obviously trying for. But posing next to James Bond and Sherlock Holmes had a certain thrill to it.
Then it was off to the Sherlock Holmes museum for some crime solving. There was a long line stretching down the pavement with people periodically posing at the door with a Sherlock Holmes hat and pipe which the door man/ticket checker would pull from somewhere. Mystery.
We then went looking for a fish and chips store that the Lonely Planet had recommended but it was closed. In fact, every fish and chips store that we came across was closed. So here's a tip: it is easier to catch a fish and grow the potatoes yourself than find a fish and chips store open on a Sunday in London.
One very long walk, 2 swips of the amazing Oyster card and a quick stop at Tescos (Woolies to us Aussies) later and here you find me. In an internet cafe near Kings Cross Station, slightly uncomfortable because of the unanticipated heat, writing my blog.
Until next time dear reader!
