Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
We arrived in Surat Thani about 6am and walked to a little cafe nearby for breakfast. We then took a 2 hour songthaew ride to the boat stop, where we transferred onto a little wooden motor boat to cross the most idyllic lake to our rafthouses. The lake was artificially created 14 years ago by building a dam over 3 rivers, to create power by HEP. It was the most beautiful place, just a vast area of green clear water filled with jungle islands made from limestone mountains, just like something out of Jurassic Park. We got soaked sitting at the front of the boat, but we soon dried off in the hot sun, and we made creatures out of the various islands which were all strangely shaped! Out rafthouses were gorgeous, just bamboo and wooden shacks floating in the lake tucked around the corner of an island. They floated on polystyrene blocks and air-filled barrels, and were joined by floating ladders which led all the way to the island shore where a little toilet shack was. We managed to acquire the biggest and best rafthouse, right next to the large floating hut where we ate all our meals and sunbathed. Our hut had a balcony with a ladder leading into the water and we had lots of rubber rings and kayaks free to use whenever we wanted. We spent a lot of time just sunbathing and jumping in and out of the water which was so refreshing and clean, and we could swim out to a rope swing which was fun. Hannah kayaked around the island looking for creatures while Liv went on a boat trip to a fairly dry waterfall which she climbed up to see the view from the top, then went on to visit a little fishing village which was 50 people living in floating huts on the lake. She then ended up visiting a bat cave which you have to swim into to see the hundreds of bats living on the ceiling, which then fly over your head when you splash the water. Hannah jumped off a massive rope swing which hung from a tree on the island, and we sat and watched the sunset over the lake- absolutely beautiful. At about 9 o'clock we set off on a night safari on the dense island, where we had to keep silent to be in with a chance of catching glimpses of some of the nocturnal creatures. We saw a baby tarantula, and the nest of a large one- though thankfully it didn't want to come out! We also saw bats, termites and sacoda, and a little frog. Some geckos also joined us for dinner as did lots of spiders and cockroaches! We then had a blissful night floating as we slept.
