Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
We woke early to leave for a city tour, taking us first to a Jagdish Hindu temple right in the centre of town. It was similarly exquisite, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and built in 1651 by the Maharana Jagat Singh 1. The marble floor was freezing early in the morning! There were devils holding up the pillars, typical of the temples, and a basil tree was caged in the grounds as it's sacred in their religion. We then moved up the road to the magnificent City Palace, still the residence of the present Maharana. It is carved out of yellow sandstone and stands right on the bank of the Lake Picholla. The interior was beautifully decorated with delicate mirror-work mosaics of peacocks and elephants. The rooms were filled with beautiful paintings, mostly depicting stories like animals being chased, and life inside the palace. Many rooms had huge pools once filled with silver coins, and from the top we saw the wall which used to be the mid-line for an elephant tug-of-war! We then spent a lazy afternoon browsing through the bazaars, purchasing as we went, lovely jewellery! We also found a french bakery where we were so excited to fulfill our dream of a tuna sandwich! It's awful but a man took us back through a building to his showroom as usual of scarves and silk etc, and as we were trying on the scarves we were looking at other things too. We got so sidetracked that in the end we left the shop having bought just a pillow cover for Liv. It wasn't until we were trying on belts on the other side of town later on that Liv suddenly wondered why she could feel something on her neck when her scarf was tied onto her bag, and we realised she had walked out with a scarf she had been trying still on!!! We were so embarrassed and just couldnt find that same street again but we have to admit the scarf has come in rather useful since!! oops! We ended the successful day by buying chocolate brownies from the bakery, and watched 'Catch Me If You Can' while eating them in bed!
