Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
We woke really early (5.30am) once again to the sounds of beating drums, and set out just after 6 in the pitch darkness still through the dim streets towards a temple on the highest mountain around the lake to watch the sun rise. The streets were already busy, probably due to the kite flying festival which was taking place today. Out of the town we found our way up the hill, only by the light of the full moon, though by the time we were at the strenuous rocky last stretch of the climb the sun was nearly up. It was a demanding and steep climb and we worried we wouldn't make it in time, but the view all the way up became more and more beautiful looking back over the lake and Pushkar. We eventually reached the top where we met the 4 Canadians from our tour, and bought some gorgeous freshly squeezed orange juice just in time for the sunrise. It was absolutely stunning to see the sun coming up so quickly over the mountains and filling the sky, and as people began to worship, music drifted up the mountain. People were already celebrating the festival by the lakeside, and we were really pleased we had made the effort to rise so early! Monkeys hovered over us as we ate a quick breakfast at the mountain top cafe, and one even came right over to the table after we had watched it eye up Liv's toast and creep over, and we couldn't believe it when it reached out and snatched a slice right from her hand!!
When the sun was fully risen we started descending the mountain, armed with massive rocks ready to throw at the fierce monkeys! As we got closer to the town we could more clearly make out the bright kites filling the sky, and by now the streets were buzzing. After the adventure we settled down to a second breakfast at the hotel, a delicious buffet! Pushkar is a great place to stay as there are always people in the ghats worshipping and full of pilgrims and holy men (and of course cows). We then spent the whole afternoon shopping and enjoying being in the middle of the festival- we passed brass bands playing in the street followed by women in brightly coloured saris, and they were handing out free food for all. We visited lots of jewellery shops just like Aladdin's caves, full of many colours and style of necklaces, and in one a priestly man gave Hannah a free neck and shoulder massage! We stayed out into the evening, eating more street pancakes, and ended up at a very cheap but delicious buffet restaurant (Om Shiva) where we paid just 50 rupees for a feast and yummy banana and papaya lassis, followed by bananas and custard and delicious sugarry doughnuts which we had 3 helpings of! We amused ourselves by watching amusing Bollywood films on our tv and examining all our purchases again!
