Hannah and Liv's Travel Update
We started today visiting the Jantar Mantar observatory, the biggest of 5 built by Jai Singh II and immaculately looked after! It was an incredible place, built between 1728 and 1734 with 16 instruments, some of which are still accurate enough to use regularly today. The Unnatansha Yantra was used to determine the positions of stars and planets at any time of the day and night. There were two sunken marble hemispheres in the floor which mapped out the heavens, and an area called the Rashivalaya Yantras which are 12 structures of the zodiac which face different angles and constellations and are used to predict horoscopes. There were different sized sundials which could tell the time to an accuracy of up to 2 seconds as well as many more astronomical instruments. Climbing to the top of large sundials meant we could see right over Jaipur.
From there we went to the City Palace, which was once home to the Maharaja of Jaipur. It was a particularly impressive set of buildings, with beautiful architecture and intricate decoration, with good museums full of weapons, costume, and one with a fantastic collection of manuscripts, scrolls, paintings, photos and carpets, belonging to the royal family gone by. We arrived back at the hotel shortly after lunchtime and walked straight back down the main road to MacDonalds for lunch! It was packed with everyone staring at us though we really enjoyed the different meal and were treated to watching the cricket on a mini tv on the wall! In the evening we went to the Raj cinema, where we watched a brilliant Bollywood film, Dosti- with the traditional dance and songs! The cinema was so old-fashioned and impressively structured and decorated, and the interval halfway through allowed our tour guide to explain exactly what was going on as it was completely in Hindi! The cinema was absolutely packed with whole families and young children, and unlike English cinemas, mobiles are going off all the time and people just wander round and chat! Such an experience! Afterwards we went to Barista where we indulged in warm chocolate cake and coffee, before heading to a posh revolving tower hotel (Om Tower) where we had Cosmolitans and Pina Coladas looking out over the city and twinkling lights- a real day of indulgence!
