We woke this morning to enjoy a truly gorgeous breakfast of breads and croissants in the Mathys dining room and prepared for our tour of Moet & Chandon. It was only at this point that we thought of Googling Andys mysterious Anddoloutte. Let's just say we found it on a website called "things that stink" & faeces was a main ingredient!!
Just a short stroll from our residence was the Cathedral d'reims. In such a small town it was an impressive size. We tried the door, and it opened. We walked in to hear choir singers practicing for the Sunday morning mass about to start. Andy and Michelle took the opportunity to discreetly take some photos and record the rehearsal. The two Karens took pictures of the exterior and we all got a few sneaky fun shots of our faces peering out the door.
From the cathedral we walked to the entrance of avenue de champagne. This street is the wealthiest in Europe and homes of the highest quality champagne houses. Can i get a hell yeah!!!!!
The avenue begins with a gorgeous park on one side, and on the other is Moet & Chandon.
We took every opportunity to take photos, mostly in front of very grand CLOSED gates! We did find one place open to the public so went in and had a tasting (why the hell not ay!)
Next on the itinerary was our tour of Moet & Chandon. We learnt very quickly that it was not pronounced 'Mowee' like it's commonly referred to in straalia, but when spoken in a beautiful French accent, sounds like a delicate sound of 'moWet'. ScarJo is the face of Moet and does a short film introduction. We then went straight down into the cellar caves around 30m underground. I'm sure a few of you champagne lovers out there would be curious to know that every bottle of Moet & Chandon and Dom Perignon Champagne ever made, was done so in the very place we were standing. The caves twisted and turned totaling 25km of caverns filled with champagne bottles at various stages of the aging process. We once again b*****ed around taking photos and got separated from our tour group. Running past the hundreds of thousands of dusty bottles, laughing but half panicked we might be lost in there forever - not a bad way to go I suppose! We eventually found our group heading into the tasting room (phew, we made it in time). After a few glasses under our belts, we headed for the souvenir shop. The girls decided to all buy matching bracelets to commemorate our holiday.
The bubbly went straight to our heads so it was time for a quick lunch before the 285km drive to Dijon.
Just before we checked out and said farewell to our gracious hosts, Swanny showed us all an amazing champagne shop/cellar/tasting/restaurant that she had found the previous night on her search for pre dinner drinks. It was very different to anything we've seen in Perth. For take away service, you would choose your bottle from the cellar downstairs (all vineyards represented had a write up about their products), then you would take your bottle upstairs to the sales counter and they would swap it for a cold one PLUS give you a complimentary ice bag to keep it chilled! What a service!
On the road again, Dijon here we come!
