Not having managed time for "reccy" of the train station we had wanted to do the day before we got up super early Saturday morning checked out of the Royal Bergere and caught a maxi cab to Gare de est.
Our mission was to get to Riems (1+ hr away on the high speed TGV ) early enough to pick up our hire car before Eurocar closed at 12noon. After a bit of struggle finding the right seat reservation queue we were advised that the train we wanted had been fully booked for 3 weeks! Major bummer!!
We managed to get seats on the next train (2hrs later) but this meant we missed our booked tour at the Veuve Champagne house, luckily we were still able to get the car as Eurocar opened again in the afternoon.
We had a wonderful lunch in the gorgeous main street of Reims and made our way to Epernay the true heart of French champagne country. With Andy behind the wheel & Michelle & the GPS navigating we arrived at the very lovely and quaint (b&b) home of Dider & Ariel Mathy.
The house dates back before the revolution and our rooms were the picture of french comfort. The girls took advantage of free wifi and checked in with facebook adding a few pics of the holiday so far and Andy played guitar ti the delight of our hosts, their visiting friends and of course us.
We headed out for dinner and whilst us girls enjoyed average dinners of fish or pasta poor Andy ordered the regions speciality pork dish. In our 10 years together I have never seen him unable to eat something but the " Anddoloutte" he had unwittingly ordered was pronounced inedible and he could not get the taste out of his mouth for hours after!
Though we would have liked to explore some of Epernay's lovely champagne bars it seemed the hassle of dragging and stowing our luggage on the train ( a major drama) had again left us exhausted so instead we went back to our Chambre de Hotel and turned in long before our very surprised hosts!
