We arrived in La Rochelle just after 9pm. It's still really light but that didn't stop us from having trouble finding our hotel!!
We suspected it may prove difficult when we entered the address into the GPS and it had an emblem of a car with a big red strikethrough! We drove around for a while and asked a few locals, then did the rest on foot. We found it down a lane way that didn't have vehicle access (or a lift!!).
The next obstacle was to find a parking spot. Andy and Michelle decided to do a reccy on foot, as the one way streets were difficult to maneuver around - while the two Karens stayed with the car. We found a spot and while Michelle stood guard, Andy sprinted back to the car and was back in moments gliding into the spot with no hassles or arguments from the locals.
By the time we checked in and got our bags up to our 'cosy' rooms, it was near on 11pm. I guess by this stage we're getting used to eating late - still, even by european standards, kitchens were closing food service.
We found a restaurant on the harbour that was still happy to serve us, but after looking at the menu - there was nothing on there that appealed to any of us. We quickly did a runner from our table and settled at a cafe serving burgers. We all decided that a hamburger and chips was what we needed after O.D'ing on french cuisine for the past week. Our hamburgers unfortunately arrived in the form of a Crepe!! They were lovely and very different, but not what we thought we were getting (getting used to that as well!!).
There were night markets open until just before midnight and the whole place was buzzing with uni students! We found out that today was the first day of their summer break and they'd all just finished exams, so they were celebrating!! We saw lots if street drinking - but they were all kind spirited and didn't seem to hassle anyone.
I would just like to say now that so far, the French people have been nothing but kind, helpful and friendly. I don't comprehend to general consensus that they are a rude population? We certainly haven't seen any indication of that.
Bed time? Yes!
