Today we departed Oberammergau and traveled Northeast towards Regensburg. Our first stop was at Ettal, to see a Benedictine monastery. Like most of the churches we have seen, it was very ornate.
We have been concerned about the effect of the flooding on this part of the trip, but so far the only deviation from our original plan has been lunch. We will not be eating in the restaurant that is beside the Danube. It is under water.
On our way to Regensburg, we drove through Munich. We could see the towers of St. Peter's cathedral in the distance, and were close enough to the Olympic Village that I was able to take a few pictures. Not far outside Munich we passed through an area of hops fields. They are easy to spot because they are staked with long poles, and the plant grows up like a vine, on a string.
We had a very good lunch of German potato salad, sausages, and sauerkraut in Regensburg. This city was once a Celtic settlement and then later a campsite of Roman Legions. Our tour was very brief. We saw St. Peter's cathedral, where I tried to get pictures of the gargoyles. We walked down to the Danube river, and saw some parts of the roman wall that date from 179 AD.
On the way to Prague our tour guide talked to us about Jan Hus and the Hussite wars.
The landscape has changed a great deal. There are no more mountains.
We have been warned about the pickpockets in Prague.
