We started the day with a visit to the Reichstag - the House of Parliament. To get there we walked by the Brandenburg Gate and beside the Teirgarten. We saw the memorial to European Jews murdered during WW II, and the memorial to the members of the Reichstag who were killed because they resisted Hitler. We went up to a cupola on top of the Reichstag and could see most of the city from there.
Then we went to Check Point Charlie, the famous border crossing from Allied held Berlin to the occupied Communist Russian held side of Berlin. That area is very commercialized. There were two young men in uniforms waving an American flag in front of the checkpoint building and a lot of people had their picture made with there. I am certain that the 2 men were neither military or American. Close to Checkpoint Charlie we saw a stretch of the Berlin Wall that has been left standing. It is by coincidence over the site where some SS torture chambers have been discovered.
Our last stop of the day was at Pergamon Museum, where we saw remains from several ancient cities in Turkey.
Berlin is very crowded, and there seems to be construction everywhere. We will leave here tomorrow for Nuremberg, Rothenberg, and Salzburg. Our traveling companions are going back to Murfreesboro.
