As we left Prague for Wittenberg and Berlin we passed through the area where the Soviets camped in 1968 as they prepared to invade Czechoslovakia.
Our route had to be altered in the area of Dresden because of the flooding. On the autobahn we passed a convoy of firefighters who had come to help with the effects of the flooding. The bridge to Wittenberg was closed so we had to go a different way, which caused a problem because our bus driver had to take a break before we could get there. We stopped for 30 minutes on the side of the road. A policeman came by to tell us that we were not allowed on the side of the rode that bordered the water. The normal depth of the water is 2 meters. It is now at 7.
We finally got to Wittenberg about 1:30. First, we saw the door of the church where Martin Luther hung his 95 theses, then we went to his home, which is now a museum. The festival that had been planned to celebrate his wedding anniversary had been cancelled.
We left Wittenberg at 3:30 and drove to Berlin. After a quick dinner at our hotel, we went to the Opera. It was La Traviata by Verdi. It was long.
