It was another early start to the day. Woke up at 2am as people in room next to mine in LA hotel were noisy and sounded like they were taking drugs. Got out of bed at 3 and shuttle fetched me just after 4. By the time I checked in was close to 5.30am. Most of these damn American Airlines insist that you use self check in which is usually a stuff up and you need a consultant anyway. Arrived to in a cold and cloudy San Francisco. Weather forecast for the week was a maximum of 18 Celsius. It was cold throughout the week and needed a jacket everyday. Nights were especially cold and needed a fleece top and a jacket.
Used the BART (metro) train to get to the hotel. The hotel was about 2 blocks from the station and easy to find. The hotel is celebrating its 100 year birthday this year. The room is a little small, and the floors are wooden but the finishings and facilities are modern and tasteful. It is also perfectly situated in the heart of the tourist area near Union Square. It is close to bus routes, the cable cars start on the next block, and close to the street car route. The wharves are within (long)walking distance also. Only issue is that there is lots of street noise as it is so close to the cable cars. The queue for the cable cars is almost always a block long and only tourists seem to use them.
I started by taking a walk to the ferry building. There is a frames market every Saturday. I bought a single peach for over $3 but it was so delicious! Walked along the piers past the Alcatraz ferry pier and Louis Vuitton/ America's Cup pier and Pier 39. Someone tried to sell me a ticket for Alcatraz but I didn't buy it. I didn't have a ticket since they are sold out 2-3 weeks ahead.
Walking back to the hotel, I got my first taste of the steep hills that SF is famed for. You can feel the pull on your calf muscles on the uphill. Downhill was more painful for me as the bruise on my toe had not yet healed and this put pressure on it. These hills are seriously steep!
