Whew.....what a long ride from Heathrow to downtown London! We were glad that we were coming from Dublin as it had helped acclimate us to big city life. Large cities require a different state of mind, a different kind of energy and a different approach to sightseeing. Without really talking about it directly Mike and I were both in the same place as far as seeing the places we wanted without being manic to do it all. Guess that's one of the silver linings to getting older (that and the senior discounts)! We stayed at a Hilton Hotel in the part of London called "Angel" and it was well connected with the Tube as well as buses. London's metro system is EASY to use, direct and without hidden caveats that other systems have. That night we met Eric and Philippa for dinner where we were introduced to Philipa's parents, Penny and Tony Soskin. We had a delightful meal and enjoyed finding out about London from the Soskins who have lived there as well as learning more about each other. Penny graciously treated all of us to the meal as a welcome to London. It was a much appreciated gesture. The topic of the evening for all of us was the Trooping the Colours which the Soskin famly and Eric attended to honor the Queen's birthday. Philippa's brother, Simon, was the lead in organizing and implementing this event. From the description and the pictures it was memorable in every way. No one can do pagentry like the British! The colors, the uniforms, the regalness of the royal family was remarkable. Eric said he had never seen anything like it and was captivated by it all.
