We woke about 7 to a huge storm, torrential rain thunder and lightening. So much for checking out the beach today.
Average breakfast (far from what we expect from a Hyatt) and we were on the road again. We took the more scenic route along the gulf coast. The weather cleared to a sunny, hot windy day, apart from the wind it was far more pleasant than it has been over the last few days.
We passed a number of military bases. At one stage with the gulf on our right and a base on our left we were stopped at lights and a huge herc came in from the gulf to land. It loomed large right over us....
Further along we were seeing lots of F22's, increasing in numbers as we got closer to Tyndall AFB. We stopped for lunch and watched several come in to land at the base; one very happy plane spotter boy lol
Along the way there were lots of bird life, herons, pelicans and eagles all fishing. We spotted several large eagle nests too. A small tortoise (?) crossed the road in front of us, Pete managed to dodge it and it was past half way before we lost sight of it, hopefully it got to where it was going. There were a few signs warning about bears but we didn't see any.
Leaving the coast behind it became more rural and very green. Forests & logging trucks a plenty, wheat, corn, potatoes, cattle, chooks and even some sheep.
Half an hour out of St Augustine we started seeing lightening and could see the roads had been rained on recently. Fifteen mins out we hit the rain, not heavy enough to bother us.
We lost an hour at some point and arrived just after 8pm and settled into our room. A little later we headed over to the nearby Denny's and had dinner.
