We are loving southern Greece. With only 12,000,000 people it feels so much kinder than Italy's 60,000,000.
The Greeks are friendly & helpful. We love their fresh produce, and it's cheap. The beaches are fabulous as are the camp grounds, they're about $10 to $15 less expensive than Italy's and they are also much nicer. Greece is almost ready for summer with all the cafes just putting out the tables & chairs. We've never seen so many seats, I'm sure there must be almost one for everybody. I mean there would be 100 - 200 tables with chairs in a row all serviced by different cafes. It's a great sight. Where possible the seating is on the beach front or where there is a fabulous view. We prefer Italian coffee to Greek but everything else is just fine here. Greece is noticeably cleaner and tidier than Italy, I guess it may have something to do with the population, as well as civic pride. We are loving the green lawns again, we never saw one in Italy.
Today we have been on one of the world's most amazing roads. From Kalamata east to Sparti. And yes Kalamata is the home of the olives.. In Italy as well as Southern Greece the olive tree and citrus is king. We have not seen so many trees of any sort before. They are growing up steep hills and down steep gullies; I don't know how they harvest the fruit on such steep places. Anyway back to the amazing road. 50 kms of spectacular scenery. The road goes through a mountain pass and winds back and forth zig zagging up & down the mountain, sheer rock faces to the left & right. The road is chiseled out of the rock in places. Quite a scary ride when I was on the outside looking down the cliffs. Hopefully the photos will do it justice as words do not paint it well enough. One of the truly memorable sights of the trip.
