On my second day in Ko Phi Phi I decided to take a boat trip around the islands.
This included Ko Phi Phi Lei which is where the film "the beach" starring Leo Di Caprio was filmed. The boat stopped at Maya Bay (pictured) which is where the main beach is, and the lagoon.
Both were very spectacular scenes, the lagoon in particular. Unfortunately remains of the 2004 tsunami still lingers which still has a devastating effect on polluting the ocean.
One could imagine why hollywood chose this destination, but I'm sure all the debris wasn't present back when it was filmed.
The rest of the island also has a certain stench which is undoubtedly a result of the tsunami. The reconstruction process is still going on and it's a little eery to see signs for tsunami evacuation points.
It's clear that Ko Phi Phi is getting back on it's feet. And I'm sure it's the tourist industry that has assisted in this process. Although this may also be it's downfall.
After 4 nights in Ko Pha Ngan including a full moon party, the last thing I need is another Ko Pha Ngan on a smaller scale!
I don't mean to sound negative about the place. The lonely planet portrayed it as a paradise island, however it's not quite there in my opinion. I believe Ko Tao is much closer to paradise.
What this place does have is a great nightlife with several bars including the Irish bar with 3-4-1 buckets (lethal!!) and a reggae bar which offers the burger challenge, which my friend Aled from back home has completed (I have the pictures to prove it). It also offers customers to get up & box someone in the ring to win a bucket!!
As I sit in the sunflower bar, taking another sip of my Chang, one things for sure, wherever I am, it's better than working!!
