Today we got up at 7.00 to go on our Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour. First we had a safety briefing, which was a five minute movie. We then got on the helicopter and it was quite scary. It rose leaning forwards down and and then we went quite fast forwards. Then we flew over a crater with lava bubbling up on it. It was amazing! After the crater we saw smoke coming up out of the ground in long lines and so we asked the pilot what they were. The smoke showed where lava tubes are. Then we saw where lava had destroyed the whole town of Kalapana. There where bits of road in the middle of lava where the lava had just gone around it for no reason. There is only one house that survived the lava flow and the guy who owns it still lives there. He is known as Lava Jack and you can rent his house for a night. The only way to get there is by helicopter or by walking 3 miles to the road and then catching a ride into Hilo. You can't get compensation for your house if it gets destroyed by lava and all those houses were destroyed so the people were left with nothing. Over the last 5 years a few people have built houses back on their land where their old house was. Two of the houses have already been destroyed again by another lava flow. After the helicopter tour we went shopping and I bought a pair of Calvin Klein jeans for $4.35. Afterwards we went looking for shave ice and everywhere was shut so we had to give it a miss. Then we went back to the resort because we were tired from the day before.
