Today we got up at 7.15 to go to the Volcanoes National Park. We left at 7.45 and got to the park at 8.45. We left early because there is so much to do here. We first went into the visitor information center and watched a movie about how Hawaii was made and how the flora and fauna has evolved. Then we made our way to the steam vents, they were made by rainwater in the ground being heated up by the volcano, which then turned into steam, came out of the ground and blew everywhere. Next we made our way to the Jagger Mueseum. It had a wonderful view of the volcano and was a museum about volcanoes. Afterwards we drove to the Thurston Lava Tube. It was a tube that was once filled with lava. As soon as the lava was gone the edges hardened and the tube turned into a mining like tunnel. You are supposed to bring a flash light / torch but we had no trouble without one. Next we went to the Devastation Trail which was pretty borin so I won't go into much detail. The best part about it was the view of another volcano. It was called the Devastation Trail because lava had gone all through there and burnt all the trees and plants. We then started driving down the Chain of Craters Road and we came across massive craters called Pit Craters. The were very large craters that were very deep. At the end of the road we got out and walked past the road block. We eventually made it to where the lava had flowed over the road. It was very cool and there was a sign, of which I have a photo, of that had been covered all the way up to the top of the pole and you could just read the sign. We finally walked on the Kilauea Iki Crater, and yes I did just say on. Since the lava in the crater had hardened you could walk across it. The track went for 6.4km so it's not for the lighthearted. Afterwards it was nighttime and so we went back to the Jagger Museum to have a look at the volcano at night. It was absolutely amazing. We could only see the glow of the lava but it was still amazing. It really reminded me of Survivor when they win the reward and go to a volcano. Finally we went home and then went to bed.
