Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
I don't think we have ever been so relieved to hear the pounding of rain against the roof of our room in Moni. It was 4am and we had woken up in order to get to the crater rim of Kelimutu to see the volcanic lakes at sunrise. After a bad nights sleep we were in no hurry to get out of bed so hearing the downpour brought a welcome sigh of relief and an extra few hours rest. The rain continued for several more hours but eventually it stopped and we decided to risk heading up to Kelimutu even though the clouds were completely covering it.
The road up was littered with potholes and we had to drive through a flooded river (I closed my eyes). We made it to the car park and it was then up to me and Steve to climb the rest of the way dodging the swampy ground. The crater rim was very lunar looking and we were lucky that the cloud had cleared enough for us to see the whole area. The crater has 3 lakes the largest of which is a vibrant turquoise, the other brown and the third one black. The colours of the lakes are a result of chemicals in the soil but can change according to the weather or time of day and it is a very spiritual place for the local people.
After spending some time walking around and taking photographs we headed back to the car for our journey back to Bajawa and then Luanbanbajo and....diving!!!
