Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
We left the luxuries and modernity of Singapore to fly into Indonesia, our first stop being Bali. As we landed late at night we found ourselves staying in Kuta which we had wanted to avoid for fear of it being another Phuket situation. As morning dawned our instincts were right - Steve was mobbed by desperate traders and dragged into various shops to look at a wide array of tourist tat. It is low season here so there is an air of desparation as people try to make money to survive. Kuta is also trying to claw its way back from the effects of the 2 bombings in the last few years. The tourist industry has taken a bit of a battering as a result so the locals jump on any new (or old) blood in the hope of a few rupiah. The bad side of this is that you don't want to leave your hotel room or restaurant as the constant hassle you get walking down the street really drives you mad.
On top of this Kuta is not that great a place unless you are 18, into surfing, dance music, drugs and lots of alcohol and then I'm sure it is amazing.
So, this postcard is going to be very short and uninteresting. We sat on the stony stretch of beach, played cards, ate, drunk, read a book, listened to music, ate, drunk and then got a taxi to Ubud. That's all I can say about Kuta really - we did stop to pay our respects at the memorial to the 2002 bomb victims - but one day was more than enough for us clean living, old fogies!
