We got up at 7am and headed for the Louvre. On our way Steve took a couple of photos of some Paris landmarks in the early morning rising sun. We walked through the gardens towards the famous pyramid in the middle of the Louvre square. Luckily we had purchased tickets the day before and after a 45 minute wait for it to open the race was on to find the Mona Lisa.
After briskly walking through halls of amazing paintings and sculptures (plus climbing a few flights of marble stairs) we found her. The hall was fairly quiet (only a couple of people deep) so we managed to get some good photos before the crowds really came in. We then went off to look at an Egyptian artefact exhibition, some French paintings, and a full size replica of Napoleon's Apartment . We then ventured to the lower ground floor to see some medieval buildings that the Louvre has been built on.
From here we walked to Notrè Dame which is a very old church on a small island on the Seine. This was massive and a engineering marvel. Inside we recognised parts of the church where the Davinci Code was filmed.
After walking our legs off, we decided to catch a cab up to the Arc de Triomphe. Before going in we stopped at a small cafe and had a baguette which was delicious.
Then it was time to visit the Arc de Triomphe which meant going under the road as no one wants to mess with the traffic circling the famous landmark. We paid 9 euro to climb the spiral staircase to the top and the views were amazing. We also went to the bottom and saw the grave of the Unknown Soldier and eternal flame.
We left their and then walked down the Champs Élysées which is lined with well known fashion brands. Stopping at Tiffany's we had a look at some of the jewellery and spotted a diamond ring valued at 133,000 euros. Clearly a sign that we were in the wrong place!
We then made our way back to the hotel. Steve and Larry found a small bar and had a couple of beers while the girls had a rest. We then headed back to our room and had a snooze (after walking 16km for the day) before heading out for our dinner cruise on the Seine and our last night in Paris.
The dinner cruise was great with brilliant views of Paris at night. The highlight being passing the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty replica. Service on the boat was average and the food was standard. We were all pretty tired at that point and walked over one of the 'padlock bridges' before grabbing a cab back to the hotel and getting to bed about midnight.
We enjoyed our time in Paris and certainly crammed a fair bit into the two days. She is a beautiful city full of history and culture. Tomorrow (Thursday) we hop on the train to London.
