First up on the list today was another Glacier walk, this time Fox Glacier. The weather wasn't as good but the glacier was amazing, we stopped for the somewhat obligatory now it seems photos, where we all seem to be posing as if we are in a boy band all of the time, it's getting to be a bit of a long running joke now, so I think we are hamming it up a little but it's still fun doing it!
One of the good things about travelling with friends on long car journeys is the games. You always have to have at least one car game, but we have managed to gather quite a few. We have Izzy Bizzy let's get Quizzy for when we want to think about, we have hitting each other in the face unexpectedly with a flight pillow, whilst shouting POK -it's a good one! - and we have Car Bingo. Oh and not to forget the, I'm going to take the last word you just said and say "you're a …." (Whatever the last word was, to you….that one goes on for quite a while as you just keep abbreviating the word until somebody loses. Example:
"I've got a stitch"
"You're a stitch"
"You're an itch"
"You're a tit"
Stupid and totally immature but funny all the same and incredibly entertaining when you screw yourself over. Entertaining as that game is it's more of an 'anytime, anywhere' game, so for this particular car journey we picked Car Bingo. We have seen so many hire cars and vans etc that we all chose one of the top four:
Chris: Juicy
Mish: Britz
Darren: Maui
Me: Back Packer
Well, needless to say before we even arrived back in Wanaka we already knew Chris had won followed by Darren then Michelle and Me bringing up the rear, with only spotting 2 vans I think. Stupid game anyway…
Before arriving in Wanaka however, we of course stopped along the way! Bruce Bay was first up, we saw the beach there and all the quartz stones, where lots of people had written their names on them and things like that, so all these white stones were covered with names, which actually looked quite good.
Ship Creek for a while next and we spent more time looking along the coast line for Greenstone and generally just taking in the sights. The weather was a little strong, so there were some amazing waves coming in and Darren nearly got caught out a few times by the tide coming in, narrowly avoiding doing the same thing I had done yesterday!
We also stopped at Roaring Billy Falls, which we had intended to do on Tuesday but ran out of time with all the other Falls' we stopped at. Roaring Billy was a nice little walk out to the waterfall and we had a bit of a laugh taking pictures of us all walking, Michelle deciding to take pictures from the front looking back on us all and me deciding that looking like I was about to attack her would be funny - Chris on the other hand went for rude hand gestures and Darren went for looking like he was going to clobber us with threatening weapons. We are such a lovely bunch of people….
Once in Wanaka we found some food and sat by the Lake for a bit whilst we entertained ourselves by watching and doing voiceovers for a few ducks that were walking around, gave them a little story, he'd found another duck, she wasn't happy, was going to stand on one leg until he promised to come back to her etc etc, that kind of thing... (I'm very good at it - really I am!) Around that area of the Lake there is also a giant sculpture of a hand that you can climb (well, I say that, thinking about it i'm not TOTALLY sure you are actually allowed to but...) so we decided to have a couple of photos taken.
Now, what happened next, I can tell you has scarred me for life. Everybody knows that I am not the most blessed human being in the height stakes, but it does NOT mean that people, 'friendddss' can take advantage in public. No Christopher, Michelle & Darren - NO!
After helping me half up onto the hand I was left half hanging (literally) of the bloody things fingertips, only to try and pull myself up, whilst laughing hysterically at the fact my bum was just in the air for all to see and there wasn't a lot for me to do. Well, eventually I pulled myself up and managed to hold on to the thumb for dear life whilst I recovered and tried to find a good footing to actually support myself in an upright position.
It was at this time that Chris thought it would be funny to jump up behind me, hand up over his forehead as if he were looking off into the distance, in what can only be described as a compromising and altogether rather uncouth situation that everyone thought would be good to photograph, even though (!) I screamed "my mother and GRANDMOTHER will be seeing these photos!!!!"
Moral of the story?
If you can't climb up onto a giant hand all by yourself, don't accept a helping one from your friends.
