FIRSTLY I want to let you guys know about a yummy wrap place in Vegas! I promised I would mention them because they were so great. When Subway turned its back on us poor, drunk, on a budget world travellers because they wanted to close, these guys provided us with super yummy cheap food and lovely, lovely service! The place is called "Great Wraps" and it is in the fashion mall part of the strip - opposite the Wynn and Encore hotels (I think!). So yumyumyum those who are like us - travelling on a budget but still want good healthy food head to this place!
Right... I know it seems like I'm getting quite slack with this blog, but I promise I will get better. Vegas was absolutely exhausting and I had no time to write! Yesterday was pretty mental. Matthew and I accidentally got drunk. Genuinely an accident! We bought these massive slushy drinks (literally huge) but we thought they wouldn't put that much alcohol in, and that it would be more lemonade than alcohol. But they put in heaps - and the combination of alcohol and 40c heat took its toll D:
So we got drunk quite quickly and unexpectedly. We ended up hitting the tables at Bellagio and played a bit of blackjack! And wooooo we both came out winning (me by just US$10, Matt by US$75)! So yay, we can both say we have now gambled in Vegas! We also went to some bars so partying in Las Vegas can also be ticked off the list! However we didn't get home until pretty late, then had to wake up at 4 to catch our plane. So now I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself - hungover and exhausted. I also didn't manage to get breakfast until like 9 so I was also pretty hungry throughout most of our flights.
OH yeah we also witnessed a protest! It was outside the Cosmopolitan hotel because the culinary staff want a contract or something. It was pretty cool. I love protests because I think they represent how much freedom people have. I was explaining to Matt about how it shows freedom in a country. All you have to do is compare these people protesting to people who try to protest in Syria...
So, concluding Vegas. It was pretty cool. It's very, very over the top and some of the things there are just mind blowing (man-made volcanoes, massive fountain shows, massive hotels and complexes). I really do think that it's impossible to have a full understanding of Vegas until you've experienced it yourself. Personally I wasn't too fond of it - everything was extremely fake, and it was HORRIBLY hot! But I'm happy we went so I can actually make that judgement for myself :)
Few things I would recommend for people going to Vegas:
- I downloaded a great app for travelling. It's called TripAdvisor and it basically has multiple city guides that can be used without internet. It has maps, itineraries, restaurants, attractions, and so on. We used the itineraries in Vegas because it meant we got to see lots of cool things for free! So yeah, deffo download it if you're travelling!
- If you are coming for a while, you definitely will need a LOT of money. We managed to do it cheap because we weren't here for long. But if you're staying for more than a few days you need to be aware of things like you will probably have to eat out for every meals. We didn't see any supermarkets! Also the main things you can do in Vegas are gambling and nightclubs - which obviously can cost a bit of money.
- Be prepared to do a bit of walking. We stayed about ten minutes from the strip which was really good value for money. But I think even if you paid extra to stay in one of the main hotels on the strip (which I think would be amazing and would definitely tell people to look in to it), you still have to walk around heaps to see every thing else. The hotels all look deceptively close but you have to spend hours walking around, and in 40c heat that's challenging. Also there's very little seating in Vegas unless you're happy sitting in front of a slot machine (the whole strip has been very well designed like that!)
- If you decide to drink, buy the cool colourful yard glass things that you can buy off the street! It's kind of expensive, but it gets you drunk and looks fun too!
- If you wanna gamble cheaply, try out the free gambling classes that some of the hotels offer. I think we found some in the Venetian!
- You will probably get lost very easily. The hotel complexes are HUGEEEEEEEEE and everything is so incredibly detailed every where you turn that you just totally lose your bearings all the time.
Oh yeah, funny story time. Matt and I were walking along the strip with our drinks, and as you walk people try to hand heaps of cards/leaflets to you or try and get you to pay for VIP nightclub tickets etc. Most of them are for call girls, but one guy approached us asking if we were planning on going to nightclubs. When we realised it was going to cost us money we said naaaah, and then he asked where we were from. When we said we were from New Zealand, he asked if we were interested in buying cocaine. I thought it was amusing as maybe young New Zealanders have got themselves a naughty reputation in Vegas!
Right now I am in Oregon. It's only 11.20am right now but it feels like 5pm since we have been up for so long! I haven't seen much yet, but it looks pretty beautiful. And very quiet. Looking forward to seeing the sights soon :) Already seen a racoon - but it was dead on the side of the road :/
