Adventure! Gray woke Kristy and I up at 2:30am telling us to quickly get dressed and get into the mess tent. The river had flooded due to rain in the North and the water was already surrounding our tent. We did as we were told (having to exit the tent by slipping through the gap in the bathroom at the back) and watched the water rapidly rise from the mess tent, keeping a keen look out for crocodiles and hippos! As the water got higher the others were woken up (our tent was the first to go) and by about 3.30 we moved to higher ground whilst the staff rescued our stuff from out tents as well as the furniture outside. We sat behind the camp until 8am and Mum put on Out of Africa music and Mary Clair produced her huge box of skittles that she’d grabbed from her tent! Meanwhile in the dark the camp staff were rescuing beds, mattresses, chairs etc. By 5:30am the water was flowing at a serious speed and had come right into the car park. Gray and the camp guys were in the water trying to tie the tent canvas’s to the thatch to prevent them from being washed away. Apparently some of the smaller staff members were nearly swept away! Everyone made it through the night (no one drowned or was eaten by crocs!) although unfortunately there wasn’t a camp left. Gray and the staff had been fantastic – we were even made tea despite the fact the kitchen was underwater. We left for Hemingway’s earlier than expected but, apart from my mother, we all thought it was a fantastic adventure!
