Steph's Asia Trip
Got a really cool night train from Singapore to KL. It took 9 hours and we got to sleep in bunk beds - I was very excited by this but Tom was less impressed - loser! Got into my pajamas after we'd been travelling for a bit, readt to go to sleep, and then all of a sudden this man was talking on the radio - couldn't understand his english - said something about passports, anyway - thought I'd ignore it. Then we stop and everyone starts getting off!!! Turns out we were at a check point and we had to had to go through the passport control. I've never got dressed so fast in my life!! It was such a shock! Got to KL at 7:30 and Tom had some nasty looking breakfast at the station. We then got the KL tube equivalent (MRT) to a place near our hostel.
We're staying at a place called the Colliseum - it's very nice - rooms are huge and have fans which keep us cool. They said they didn't have any doubles so we each got a single - but they're so big we could easily have shared so (think they were trying to get more money out of us!!) so today I asked if we could be moved to a double and miraculously there was one free. It's still huge!! and it's got 2 beds so I don't have to get boy-aids from sleeping next to Tom.
Tom moans a lot about the heat!! I've never seen anyone sweat so much!!! Sometimes I wonder if he's got any water left to sweat out! I like to walk everywhere to see stuff - he prefers cabs and tubes. Yesterday we went to the tall tower in KL (can't remeber the name) and Tom insisted on getting a cab. He got majorly ripped off!!! They charged us 40 ringit and it should have been about 5. The guy had had the meter on for ages before we got in (I think) and we didn't check it said zero - expensive lesson to learn (about 6 pounds - they don't have pound signs on their keyboards). Tower was cool - good views.
Went to Chow Kit market in the evening - wore the wrong outfit - a strappy (long) green dress. There were hardly any women and all the man stared - felt very uncomfortable so we left (and it smelt terrible!) we were supposed to be eating there but couldn't find a hawker stall we liked so we went to pizza hut!!! Ha Ha!! 1st western meal we've had since we've been here!
Went to a cool hawker stall for lunch and ate off banana leaves - not plates!! food was great and you get loads of small portions of lots of stuff - like savory pick'n'mix - I love it!! Been trying some new things.
Went to the Batu caves today - were very impressive but had horrid monkeys in them which tried to steal our bags - should have taken a gun then maybe we could have sold them to the locals at the market!! Went on a local bus to get there - only cost 60p!!! Accommodation is costing 25 ringit (4 pounds) and i can get a meal for 70p (tom's meals are more expensive because he eats a lot more).
went to some bars last night - ridiculously expensive!! and full of westerners - no locasl - beer was 3.50 pounds - think how many meals we could get for that!!!
Going to the Cameron Highlands tomorrow morning for a few days. Booked the coach today - it leaves at 9:30 tomorrow, takes 4 hours, costs 3 pounds and the guesthouse person is coming to meet us at the bus station in the hills!! Guest house costs about 2 pounds.
Enjoying my cold showers - their mains water is not as cold as english mains, so it's actually quite nice to have cold showers.
Also - learnt yesterday that a flea market doesn't sell fleas!!! was very funny!! I always wondered why you want to buy fleas!!! Tom thought it was hillarious that I thought that. For anyone who doesn't know (like me) flea markets just have loads of small s***ty shops!!
