Steph's Asia Trip
Left Taman Negara yesterday and arrived in Jerantut in the evening. Was feeling so ill - couldn't face another meal in the park. Only managed to get KFC salad for dinner in Jerantut, but i did get a cup of tea which was reeeeeeally nice!
Shared a room with a german girl last night. I went to bed at about 10 and just flopped on the bunk and passed out. she came in at about 1am - she was quite loud so i woke up (even with my ear plugs) and introduced myself. Anyway, after about 10mins conversation she suddenly started franticly checking her bed - we then discovered that both our bunks were infested with bed bugs!!
I did notice when i came in that there were quite a few spots of blood all over the sheet on my bed, but i was feeling so ill i didn't really care. Makes sense now though - bed bugs bite you and then you bleed leaving little blood spots.
So she marched down stairs (with me following rather pathetically - feeling tired and ill) and we managed to get upgraded to an air con room!!!!! it was great!!!! Haven't had air con in ages!! and a duvet!! and even a towel with free soap and a whole toilet roll (i stole the toilet roll when i left - might come in useful!) And this morning i had my first hot shower in nearly 2 months!!! Don't ever take your hot shower for granted!!! Cold showers in the evenings are quite nice, but in the mornings they are a shock at the best of times, and when you're feeling ill they're like satan. My hot shower was sooooooooooo nice - it was great!! I stayed in there so long I nearly missed my train (at 1pm!!).
I'm in Kuala Lipis now - got a 2 hour train journey here. It's strange how quickly your perception changes. I now regard a 3 hour train journey in the same way as a 10 minute bus ride to croydon, it seems really short. Even 10 hour journeys seem quite reasonable. It's only when you get to the 20+hours that it's seems like a bit of a silly amount of time to be spending on one form of public transport in one go.
Kuala Lipis used to be the state capital (during the tin mining) but now it's subsided quite a lot. It's a reasonable size (7 thousand pop.). I think i'm the only westerner here! Will look at a couple of historic buildings tomorrow then off on the bus to Kuala Lumpur (3hours - less than 2 pounds on the local bus!! Bargain!! Much cheaper than getting the tourist bus! - might have to travel with chickens though!)
Am still ill - got a stomach bug, but had non-fired rice for dinner - hoping it will settle my somach a bit so I'll be better soon.
Going to get washing done in KL and inspect my bag for bed bug infestation - will be so mad if they've infected my stuff - they're really hard to get out. Hoping to go to Melaka for 2 days (near KL - will leave most of my stuff in kl) and then be back by Sunday eve in KL.
Ahhh.......... My hot shower was so good...............
