13.11.10Local market "San Camilo" with my Spanish teacher Rosa
My Spanish teacher Rosa asked me yesterday after school if I would like to join her to go the local market "San Camilo"?! Well, what a question….for sure I want to go! I love markets!
So we met on Saturday, 13.11.10 in front of the school and went to the local market "San Camilo" which is very close to the Plaza de Armas and only 10 Minutes away from the school. The market is a roofed market and open every day from 6am in the morning. You can buy everything what you can imagine at this market…..from a "latigo" (whip for kids) to a "jugo de ranna" (juice with fruits and an alife frog mixed in a blender) …..mmhh how yummy! I definitely haven't tried the "jugo de ranna" but I have seen how they prepared it ….and that was enough!
Before we entered the market Rosa told me to put everything into my backpack as well as my dictionary, pens, mobile, address book etc. The thieves are apparently keen to pinch everything even a bloody pen!
So we went around the market for nearly 2 ½ hours…..from the fruit stalls, via the fresh meat stalls to the "jugo" stalls where we had a yummy fresh Papaya juice! The fresh meat stalls where quite interesting as they sell everything of a cow what you can imagine of e.g. cow heart, udder, innards, hooves etc.
No idea who is buying it! Check out the photos at my album: Local Market "San Camilo"
Rosa knew quite a few people who were selling traditional clothes and it was quite interesting to find out when and where they are wearing the different costumes. Unfortunately they didn't like me taking photos.
During the two hours I was running around with a blog and pen to write down all the new words and names for the different fruits and vegetables. I more or less got a "free two hour Spanish Course" …..how awesome…he!?
After the market Rosa recommended to go to a cheap and local "cevicheria" (restaurant where they serve raw fish!) The cevicheria "El Tigre" was just a few blogs away. Rosa recommended to order "ceviche mixto" (different sorts of raw seafood) and it was definitely the right choice. We got a huge plate of all kind of fresh seafood for only 8 Euros…..and it was absolutely delicious! Both of us really enjoyed the lunch and we were chatting for nearly 1 ½ hours…..mostly in Spanish!
When I wanted to enter Rosa's number into my mobile I suddenly realised that my phone was gone. OH MY GOD….it was stolen! I remember that it was in one of my side pockets of my backpack and that was the only thing which I didn't put INTO my backpack…..as Rosa recommended before! Well, I was quite upset about my stupidity
…..but on the other side glad that it was the cheapest mobile which I bought in LIMA.
So we paid for our lovely lunch and I went straight to the next "Claro" shop and bought a new phone with a new SIM card. I realized that it is quite handy to keep in touch with other travellers and therefore it wasn't a big decision…..and for 35 Euro I had a new mobile!!!
Thanks Rosa for the wonderful day and I hope I will learn from my mistake!!!
