03.10.10 Ankunft in Lima

Nach einem sehr langen, 12 stündigen aber angenehmen Flug kam ich am Sonntag, den 3.Oktober 2010 nachmittags um 4.30pm in der Hauptstadt Lima an. Dort wurde ich von einem netten peruanischen Taxifahrer der sehr gut Englisch sprach empfangen. Von dort aus ging es dann drängelnd und mit konstanten Hupen durch die mit Autos überfüllten Strassen der 8 Millionen Haupstadt Perus. Jedoch sagte mir der Taxifahrer, dass der Verkehr sehr angenehm sei, aufgrund das es ja Sonntag war und in Lima Bürgermeisterwahlen stattfanden. Na dann möchte ich nicht wissen wie chaotisch der Verkehr während der Woche ist.

After a long 12 hour flight I arrived at 4.30pm at the international airport of Lima. The hostel organized a taxi to pick me up from the airport and a lovely taxi driver was standing outside the arrival hall with a sign and my name on it. I don't know how he managed to get me to the hostel in only 30 Minutes as the traffic was just amazingly busy even though it was only Sunday. Oh my god what a ride through the 8 Million city! I felt like sitting in a roller coaster as we went from the left lane to the right lane….but mostly in the middle with using the horn every 2 minutes.

Das Hostel HQ Villa welches mir von meinem guten Travelkompagnion Craig (Kanadier) empfohlen wurde, liegt in einem der besten Viertel Lima´s. Dort wurde ich herzlich von dem jungen Peruaner Andre empfangen, der u.a. auch fliessend Deutsch sprach. Da momentan keine Hauptreisezeit ist wurde mir ein sechs Bettzimmer zur alleinigen Verfügung zugeteilt. Da ich mich ja langsam erstmal wieder an das „Hostelleben" gewöhnen muss, fande ich das wunderbar. Abends habe ich noch ein nettes Rentnerehepaar aus England kennengelertn, die mich mit vielen und interesannten Informationen nur so zugeschüttet haben. Danke Alan und Beryl!

The hostel „HQ Villa" which was recommended by my good old travel mate Craig from Canada was situated in one of the best suburbs in Lima….called Miraflores. Andre, the guy at the reception welcomed me with a big smile on his face as he told me that he speaks German and was looking forward to meet me to practise his German. Supposedly October is a very quiet months with tourists and travellers so Andre could offer me a huge dormitory for myself. Wow…that was exactly what I needed after all the stress during the last few weeks. After a big meal at TGI Fridays I went back to the hostel where I met the lovely couple from England who provided me with loads of very useful information about tours and hostels. Thanks Alan and Beryl!

Da ich aufgrund meines Jetlacks schon um 5 Uhr morgens auf war, bin ich gleich am nächsten Tag um 8am morgens zur Strandpromenade runtergegangen und habe den wunderschönen Ausblick auf´s Meer genossen. Nachmittags habe ich mich dann in einen der viele, überfüllten Kleinbusse gesetzt und habe mich in das Zentrum Lima´s aussetzen lassen. Ja und der Taxifahrer hatte Recht, auf den Strassen wimmelte es nur so von Autos und Bussen und es hat fast eine Stunde gedauert bis ich in Zentrum war. Dort habe ich mir als erstes ein „quadband" Handy mit einer peruanischen Simkarte besorgt, da mein europäisches Handy hier nicht funktionierte. Danach ging es auf Sightseeing Tour durch Lima.

Due to the jetlag I woke up at 5am in the morning, had a lovely breakfast at the hostel and went straight down to the beach promenade where I enjoyed a lovely walk along the ocean. In the afternoon I decided to take one of the millions of tiny vans for 1 Soles to go to the city centre. Wow….the traffic was even worse than Sunday. It took ages until I arrived in the city centre but it was a very interesting and entertaining ride. Firstly I went into a mobile shop where I bought myself a new "quad band" mobile phone with a Peruvian sim card. Later on I explored Lima and had a three course lunch for 5 Soles which is approx. 1,30 Euro.

Am folgenden Tag bin ich zum nahegelegenen Swisshotel gegangen. Nadja, eine ehemalige Kollegin aus meiner Kellnerzeit in Zermatt-Schweiz hatte mir per Facebook eine Message gesendet und meinte ich sollte doch mal eine Freundin von Ihr aufsuchen, die seit zwe Jahren im Swisshotel im Lima arbeitet. Na das ist ja nett, dachte ich mir und da das Hotel auch wirklich nur 10 Minuten von meinem Hostel entfernt war, bin ich dort hingestiefelt und habe dann in dem prunkvollen 5 Sternehotel nach Carolin Hackenberg gefragt. Logischerweise wusste Carolin natürlich nichts mit meinem Namen anzufangen aber ich habe sie dann schnell aufgeklärt. Wir haben uns dann bei einem Täschen Kaffee gleich angefreundet und uns für abends auf ein paar Bierchen und Tapas verabredet. Carolin hat dann auch noch gleich Ihren Schweizer Küchenchef Reto mitgeschlürt und wir haben uns bei leckeren peruansichen Köstlichkeiten super unterhalten und die Beiden konnten mir noch so einige gute Tips mit auf meinen Trip geben.

Nadja, an ex-colleague of mine from my waitressing time in Zermatt/Switzerland had informed me about her German friend who is working for the Swiss hotel in Lima. As the hotel was only 10 Minutes away from my hostel I decided to walk over there and check if Carolin was working at that day. Luckily she was on her morning shift and very surprised when me met in the hotel lobby. After a quick introduction and the connection to our common friend Nadja she invited me for a coffee and we had a long chat. She suggested catching up for dinner and at 8pm I found myself with her and the main chef of the hotel in a stylish Peruvian restaurant/bar and tasting my first typical Peruvian dishes. Thanks a mill Carolin for the nice evening and I hope to stay in touch with you!
