Stefanie's Travel Journal
Today was fun. This journal entry and the photo album are small but it was a nice day.
I found my way to the Bangkok bus station, bought a ticket, (no small feat when you speak one word of Thai) and rode the 3 hour bus ride down to Hua Hin which was the beach retreat preferred by Thai royalty in the past (and the current king has a beach house just north of here).
Outside of Bangkok (even on the other side of the river where the bus station is) there is very little English spoken or written but Hua Hin has some western tourist hotels so the street signs had English translations and I was able to find my way around.
The beach was very nice. I enjoyed a couple hours of laying in the sun, reading my book, and walking along the beach.
I went to the Sofitel Hotel for an afternoon tea buffet as my guidebook recommended and that was a great way to cool off and relax after my afternoon in the sun.
Then I caught the bus back to Bangkok. Seating on the bus is assigned (which seemed kind of funny on the way to Hua Hin when there were only about 6 of us on the bus but since I don't understand the language I just sat where I was directed and didn't ask any questions). On the way back to Bangkok I was seated next to an Italian/English traveler, Daniel, whose father works for the UN in Bangkok. This was Daniel's fifth trip to Thailand and he knows a lot of the locals and so he gave me a lot of good tips including a good place for a Thai massage tomorrow (there are so many places to choose from, its hard to know where to go).
So all in all a very pleasant day and I'm very glad I made it to a Thai beach.
