On our second and last day in HCMC we could not pass up the opportunity to visit the War Remnants Museum, again we decided to walk and on route had to pass over a few very busy roads. Taking Sandra's hand and using my self taught line dancing skills I side stepped us over to the otherside, obviously keeping Sandra between me and the traffic.
Nearing the museum I negotiated with a street vendor to purchase a Vietnam war Chinese field cap, after several hour's of bartering we were at deadlock and I could not see any way out.
Then the 86 year old Vietnamese women pulled her master stroke, (sir you look good in it). Deal done, she went away happy to have done the deal, and I went away with £2 less in my pocket the cap and a 28 day no quibble guarantee. While walking along with my cap on I was thinking to my self, I might offend somebody with this cap on and possibly get punched if I go into the museum with it, so passing my cap to Sandra, try this on it should keep you a little cooler.
We went into the war museum and were very impressed yet saddened by the graphic pictures and stories of the Vietnam war, for three hours we strolled around like most others in near silence, taking in the scale of the cruelty and brutality inflicted on the victims, particularly those who suffered from the effects of Agent Orange and Napalm.
There is also a large collection of American military vehicles on display, a must see in HCMC and such a small entrance fee.
Heading back to our hotel we stopped off at a very traditional bordering on rough restaurant/canteen, we were the only westerners there apart from a 50 ish year old English man sat by himself taking photos of the young waitress, wonder what he was after.
Suddenly a van pulled up two men jumped out and cleared the tables out of the way, grabbing a hessian sack out of the van and dragging it past us to the kitchen.
Inside the sack this thing was snorting and squealing, its trotters were sticking out of the bottom and hair protruding through the sides. Sandra turns to me and says I think there might have been an animal in that sack, where do you think they got it, perhaps they won a prize at the carnival and there were no Goldfish left I replied.
Perusing the menu, which included frog, dove & crocodile, I couldn't decide between grilled or fried tortoise, but Sandra said that will be slow coming so I settled for noodles.
