Evening all, Steven on blog duty today. We are now in a place called Veliko Tarnovo but I'll try remember back to yesterday when we were in Sofia. After our first night out in Sofia we had a little lie in and got up and ready for breakfast which consisted of bread, salami, cheese, tomatos and olives. After stuffing our faces we decided to try some of the walking tour the hostel had suggested to us. We set off in search of all the many churches which we had been told was pretty much all Sofia had to offer and this turned out to be pretty true. We went to Alexander Nevski Cathedral which we all thought was very impressive both from the outside with its "many buildings attached together in no particular fashion" look and the inside which was second only to the St Peters Basilica. One of the other highlights which wasn't on the walking tour was we stumbled upon the changing of the guards at the presidents offices which I myself found rather amusing. The walk which the guards were doing reminded me a bit of the ministry of silly walks from monty python. On the way back to the hostel we found a great little pastry place and Tom and I both went to town on a couple of pastrys which were delicious!
In the evening we got a free meal from the hostel which was pasta and sauce and a free beer which satisfied everyones needs. We got talking to a South African bloke called Paul which turned out to be very helpful as he had just been to Greece for a couple of weeks and thats where we are heading soon so he gaves us a couple of hints and tips about places to go and stay. We went out in search of alcohol after the meal with our new friend in toe and were going to go to a paino bar which turned out to be completely empty and there was no piano to be see inside! So we left in search of alcohol again and ended up finding this nice little bar about 5 minutes walk from the hostel, even though it had taken us a lot longer to get there with Anna's map reading leading us to somewhere else.
The next day started with breakfast and a taxi ride (which turned out to be fairly eventful) to the bus depot to catch the bus to Veliko Tarnovo. We arrived at the bus depot and this is when the taxi journey got interesting. At this point we had lost Anna's bag and all the passports even though they were right next to us behind a big gas canister. You may be wondering what on earth im talking about so i shall enlighten you all. After we got out the taxi the taxi driver goes to open the boot, containing Anna's bag and the bag containing the passport, is stuck and won't open. We were fairly releaved that we weren't in a rush to catch a train so sat waiting wondering how long it would be until we got our stuff back and could get on our way. After about 15-20 minutes and a lot of fiddling and bashing about of the boot another cabbie managed to get it up much to our delight. Then next interesting bit of our day was trying to buy our bus ticket which i dont want to spend to much time on, lets just say it was a bit of a hassel. We got our bus at 12.30 and set out on the journey to Veliko Tarnovo. We arrived an hour later than expected due to 3 crashes on the motorway within about 100 meters of each other! We were picked up from the bus stop by someone from the hostel and got a tiny tour during the journey back. We got to the hostel just before 5 and thats where we are now writing this. Thats all until next time, chow!
