Car arrived at 7.20 to take us to the bus station. Couldn't all sit in one place, but 2 nice American girls moved seats, so that D & J could sit together. L&M, however, had to sit apart, as no one else offered to move seats!
~3 hour journey to the border with just one stop for refreshments (baguettes!). Then a pointless & frustrating 30 min stop at bus station, where we were given no instructions, but were expected to swap our tickets for a red sticker, denoting our next bus, post-border.
Following that, a hot and sweaty two hour wait in line to get through the Cambodian-Thai border crossing. Got partially fast tracked, but it still took bloody ages.
Then got herded onto a flat bed truck for the short journey to a café, where we were to wait for our bus to Bangkok. Got chatting to an ex-pat British Kiwi called Danny, who gave us some suggestions as to where to find a cheap hotel & we agreed to share a taxi to the area in Bangkok where he usually stays.
3 hour drive in a 12 seat minibus with a mental driver, who insisted on going as fast as possible, & overtook in all directions, whenever and wherever he could! Pretty scary at times, thankfully the kids slept through part of the journey, and before we knew it, we were stuck in Bangkok traffic jams!
Two stops along the way to refuel & buy drinks / fruit. Chatted some more with Danny (nearly 70 year old, "original traveler" with a bucket load of stories to tell! Been traveling (extensively) since 1962!)
Shared a 200 Bhat taxi to Lumphini park area, and all ended up staying at Lee Mansion 4 - vary basic room, 1 bed, so put kids on Thermarests on floor, but only 200 Bhat.
Showered and changed, then downstairs for food. Grabbed a beer from the 7-11 & sat chatting to Danny for an hour or so, while the kids settled down.
Very hard bed, but a surprisingly good nights sleep.
