Woke just after 7.30, & the kids were keen to get up & go downstairs, as they could hear the baby! Ate breakfast, completed schoolwork, showered & ready to go by the time Luis (Quique) arrived, to take us out for the day.
Drove south, out of Zacatecas, for ~40 mins to Chicomostoc with Luis & Mark, under clear blue skies. On our arrival, we realised that this was La Quemada, the archaeological site that we had read about in the LP, & had wanted to visit! The locals' name for the site was not mentioned in the book, so we had thought that there were two different sites in the vicinity of Zacatecas!
We spent about an hour exploring the site, gradually climbing further up the hill, sometimes on a track, sometimes on large steep stone staircases. It was hard work, in the blazing sunshine, & we were all grateful for regular rest stops, & drinks of cold water! The site itself was pretty impressive, & the views from the top of the hill were spectacular! After a good rest to catch our breath (D still especially noticing the altitude induced shortness of breath!), we climbed back down (in half the time!) & drove into Jerez, to explore the town, & then find food & beer. D&L tried flautas for the first time (at Quque's suggestion) & the kids had burgers (J: prawn - "delicious", M:chicken - which she didn't eat!).
We drove home (Mark with a particularly fetching lobster red glow to his face!), where Susana & Sylvia sorted out our reservation at the Hotel Maya (which is owned by Sylvia's family), in Ixtlan del Rio, for 4 nights over the New Year weekend. Accommodation sorted, we looked into the buses, & decided to try to get the 9.30am premier service, as it would be quickest (5 hrs, M$455 each). The kids packed & got ready for an early start tomorrow.
