Woken at 8.30 by the alarm clock, got up & got ready for the day. Once schoolwork was completed, we went into town to find breakfast, & discovered that not much was open. Ended up with meaty (?pork) quesadillas, even after the efforts of the waitress to misunderstand our order! Still hungry, we bought cakes & café de ollo from the bakery, & sat inside to eat another Second Breakfast!
We spent the main part of the day exploring the town. We found a bronze statue of Diego Rivera, then wandered through three pretty plazas, containing a waterfall, a church, & lots of coffee shops, respectively! Then we explored the little alleyways (callejones) of the town, including the most famous: C. del Baso - where the balconies of the houses on opposite sides of the street almost touch. Then we took the Funicular (cable car) up the steep incline to the statue of El Papita, a hero of the revolution, who set fire to the doors of the Spanish soldiers' fortress. The area around the statue was filled with stalls, on one of which a handmade leather handbag caught L's eye (M$450 + free bracelet). After admiring the views of the town, far below, we walked back downhill through more little alleyways, & came to the Templo de San Francisco, at the eastern side of the town centre. We turned back towards our hotel, & walked through the Jardin de la Union (the main plaza) to the Templo de San Diego, where L found more leatherwork, this time in the shape of earrings (M$37). We then walked the length of the central area, past the Alhondiga (fortress) to the western edge of town, where we bought bananas for an energy snack, & then sat in a little café for coffee & juice, & to rest our weary legs!
It was a very short stroll back to the hotel, before going back to the same cheap restaurant, for tea. We were not allowed to buy beer (possibly because it was a Sunday) from the Oxxo, so we returned to the room with only water to drink, & went to bed.
